Bloomberg - you can't keep the guy down

{subtitle was truncated: "People don't get it, he's taking a neutral stance

on the Islam issue."}

I just finished reading "The Making of the President 1960" by Theodore H. White,

and in it he described how JFK skillfully countered the accusations that he would

be a "papal puppet" by virtue of his religion.

He said that he was firmly in favor of the separation of church & state and

promised not to give any favoritism to Catholic schools or other institutions,

nor would he let the church influence him on so-called "moral" issues

where he said the rule of law should prevail. He won many states that

were overwhelmingly non-Catholic by following this policy.

===============================================================

Bloomberg said (while he is Jewish and has been a very staunch supporter

of Israel privately) that they should go ahead and build the mosque near

the 9/11 site if they have the means and the permits to do it. This was

followed by an uproar in both Christian and Jewish sectors.

Just today I heard on the news that he is defending the right to burn the Koran

and suddenly he is a hero. People don't get it. He's advocating the same

middle-of-the-road stance that JFK had, while in his case it's causing

him to be a lightning rod for controversy on both sides. :unsure:

For him, iIt's not a question of whether building the mosque or

burning the book are good things; it's a question of whether the rule of law permits them.
