Alien number confusion, is it wrong or just a new one?

Hi guys,

My wife received all 3 NOA1(s) recently, and I noticed that on I-485 her A# is completely different. On I-765 and I-131 the A# is the same as the one that we used to file the paperwork (the one assigned to her in K-1 process).

I know I should call the 1-800 number anyway to figure this out, but I just wanted to see if there's any information within the community that can help us.

I did search for this and found conflicting answers (one said that new A# is assigned for AOS sometimes, another said to call 1-800# and have them correct it).

Also, we just got a biometrics letter today and it has the "new" A# on it, which is totally different from the old one.

Thank you in advance.

I actually had the same question just this morning because my husbands A number on the NOA was different from the one I knew was his. I called USCIS and they escalated the call and the guy looked up both A numbers and said they were both my husbands and it was okay. I should use the number on the NOA for future USCIS-related forms.

hope that helps.

I just called USCIS but they said they need to speak with my wife to make sure she's there...and..well... I'm at work, so this will have to wait a bit. BUT! The lady I was talking to said there should only be 1 A#. I have a feeling I'm going to need to speak to someone on a supervisor level

Is your "new" A# on biometrics letter same as the A- number on the I-485? If that is the case, IMO you'd have to use that number.Good luck !!

Yes it is the same. I don't mind the new number, I just want to make sure everything is in order.

My wife got three A#'s.

1 on the NOA2

1 on the K-1 Visa

1 written on the back of the I-94 by the boarder officer

We've been told on these forums and by the SSA to use the one on NOA2. I think I'm just going to do this. I can't be arsed to call and try to point out to the goverment that they screwed up. I'll attach an explanation with the AOS packet in case they get confused.

All numbers were 1 digit off. A200, A260 and then one had too many 0's.

It's not in order sorry! This actually happened to another Aussie I know. There is only ONE alien number and should only ever BE one A number. I would use the A number as on the NOA2 from the K1 petition. You can either call the mis-information line, or if you're worried make an infopass appointment. The Aussie I remember did something to get it fixed, he got a notice correcting it but when he went to biometrics the number was STILL wrong and he had to get it changed there and it's been fine ever since.

I'll see if I can find who that was and their thread on it.

Exactly. The NOA2 number is the ORIGINAL and correct A number. The others were only errors or mis-types. Better to use the original because you KNOW it's good and connected to your name since the beginning thus tying all your paperwork together.

I agree. Her A# on I-485 NOA is just COMPLETELY different. And this has carried onto the the biometrics letter. Going to go home soon and call USCIS, in case they ask to speak to my wife again, better have her by the phone.

Thanks for the help!!!

I called the 1-800 number last Thursday. Explained everything to them.

Today I saw that my wife's EAD and AP got touched, but not I-485. Who knows, maybe they'll actually do something.

Either way, biometrics this Friday and we will bring our NOA2 from K-1 and her passport, where they can see a real A#

Sounds like a good idea to me! Good luck :D

Little update...

My wife received her AP and EAD recently, both with the "new" Alien Number that USCIS decided to assign to her...

However, we had to go in for the second biometrics (first one rejected by FBI) and the appointment letter had her "old" (k-1) Alien Number...

Also doesn't help that her second biometrics appointment didn't do any good anyway - I called FBI and they said the fingerprints are no good again

I'm tired of arguing with USCIS about all that so I was thinking maybe making an InfoPass appointment soon? I know it's a whole another can of worms, but I looked up the topics on VJ and mostly it just says gotta go to a police station and get a certificate of "good behavior" type of thing.

Since NOA-1 for EAD and AP had an "old" number, but the received documents have the "new" number, I am thinking they got it through their thick skulls, except they got it wrong.

So now I'm just waiting. There was a touch on our I-129F about 10 days ago, so maybe they are doing something with the case, who knows.
