Question for anyone who came to USA recently with an Immigrant Visa

My father recently came to US with an IV, through JFK. As far as I knew they do the biometrics at the POE, including picture which is used to produce the green card. He told me that they did take some fingerprints (not all fingers), but didn't take any picture.

It's been three weeks and we didn't receive anything so far. So, I called USCIS and spoke to an IO. He told me that he needs biometrics done before the card can be produced. So, does it mean they screwed up at JFK? Or is it normal practice to not take a picture of the immigrant?

I didn't get my picture taken, they used a digitised image of the passport photo I submitted earlier.

It looks like it took a LONG time before your GC arrived in the mail. Did you do any infoPass appt to inquire about it?

Give it at least a month and a half before you start worrying...when I checked status on USCIS website after my POE it moved back and forth (!?) and then I suddenly received 3 welcome letters (exactly the same) and green card came almost exactly a month later....

No, they told me at POE to expect it within 90 days, so I was not worried.

No reason to worry - your father's stamped visa in the passport serves as a temp green card (read the note on the visa, it says so) and can be used until you get the real card.

I understand the wait part - but it's the IO's remark that he needs to make an infopass appt to get his biometrics before he can get his GC really confused me.

Even if biometrics are needed he will receive the appointment letter (there were some reports of immigrants having to get biometrics done before they get a GC but that was several months ago, no new reports of that requirement).

Just wanted to update - my father received an ASC Fingerprinting appt letter. We got the FP done already by doing a walk-in. But it seemed very odd that they would require additional FP to issue the GC.

This is a recent development. The first I heard about it was back in September of 2009 I believe. Although, I have to say that not everyone seems to receive the FP appt letter - some just get their green card. What and who decides is still unknown at this time.

Got the card production ordered notification today. I think the hold up was due to the switch to the new format/design GC.
