LARAMIE, Wyo. » One-time federal fugitive and "Weather Underground" member Bill Ayers and a University of Wyoming student are suing the school after it banned Ayers from speaking on campus.

Ayers, 63, spent 10 years as a fugitive in the 1970s when he was part of the anti-Vietnam War group that protested U.S. policies by bombing the Pentagon, U.S. Capitol and a string of other government buildings. Nobody was hurt in the attacks by the defunct organization, which the FBI labeled a "domestic terrorist group."

Ayers, now 65 and a professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago, makes college speeches and is routinely picketed, but the University of Wyoming last week banned him from using any university venue for a planned April 28 lecture.

Ayers and student Meg Lanker sued on Thursday, asking a federal judge to issue an injunction and allow the lecture. The lawsuit alleges the ban violates free speech rights and the freedom to assemble.

A university spokeswoman declined to comment on the suit.

Lanker told the Casper Star-Tribune that Ayers will speak at the Laramie Civic Center if he's not allowed on campus.

Today, Ayers and his wife -- fellow former Weather Underground fugitive Bernardine Dohrn -- live in Hyde Park, where they moved after surrendering in 1980. Federal charges against the two were dropped because of improper surveillance, so they avoided prison, according to the Chicago

Ayers and Dohrn have raised two sons of their own and adopted a third boy whose parents were Weather Underground members who went to prison. Dohrn is a professor at Northwestern's law school, Ayers is an education professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

They were Chicago neighbors and backers of former Illinois Sen. and now President Barack Obama, a relationship became a hot topic during the 2008 presidential campaign.

The liberal elite ... know that the people simply cannot be trusted; that they are incapable of just and fair self-government; that left to their own devices, their society will be racist, sexist, homophobic, and inequitable -- and the liberal elite know how to fix things. They are going to help us live the good and just life, even if they have to lie to us and force us to do it. And they detest those who stand in their way."

Is he 63 or 65?

Well this does answer a question I raised a while back where was a case in which a leftwing speaker was prevented from speaking on a U.S. campus in the last 20 years.

Wonder how many times and how much money Ayers made from his appearances?
