Has anyone out there got any experience regarding switching your UK license for a Florida one? I have a full UK license which I have held for almost 4 years - I can't seem to find a clear cut answer on the DMV website - just looking for some first hand experience if possible. Looking at the test procedures it's a complete joke, so I'm not worried if I have to retake my test - any information is helpful!

I don't know how it is in Florida but I know how it is in New Jersey. First you take the knowledge test, and because you already have your Uk licence you don't have to take the road test.Study after the book and go to the DMV with 6 points identification. If you have any question just let me know.

In Nebraska, there is no reciprocity, so UKC's have to take the written and the driving test.

Why don't you call the DMV and ask?

Funny. There was for my wife's Mexican license. Only had to take the written since she had a valid Mexican license. In Nebraska too. Perhaps since they drive on the opposite side there, they want to make sure they are used to or can drive on the right side here.

Took my licence yesterday (tad later than I was meant to, ahem). Unfortunately you will need to take both the theory and practical. As a licence holder already, you do not need to do the Substance abuse course.

I tried to get final word on exactly what I had to do, with no luck, either no one answered phone, or they directed me to the website. Eventually I just went to the Oasis website and scheduled both the theory and practical, 45 mins apart. Nothing ventured nothing gained. Here is the website:

https://www8.flhsmv.gov/Oasis/web/pages/onlineAppointments.jsp

When you schedule you need to do it twice, one for theory, one for practical.

The total cost is $48 and you'll be in and out pretty quick. The theory has 2 tests, rules and signs, 20 questions each. The practical was an utter, utter joke, it makes a terrible mockery of having you sit the test after having a UK licence. There is a reason why drivers in Florida drive like they do...

My practical, the examiner checked lights and horn. Then we went to a test track out the back. Couple of turns, straight in park, emergency stop, 3 point turn, done, literally 5 mins. When he said I had passed I asked "Is that it?!, We don't even go out on the road?!"

Some key points:

Pay attention to the documents you need, they are real strict about that

Make sure you have proof of your SS number

The eyesight test tests BOTH eyes, if you are short sighted in one ete you will not pass it without glasses (caught me out, had to go home get glasses)

Make sure you have proof of insurance and registration in the car.

Edit, also attached the Fl dirvers handbook to this message, their version of the highway code. It's about 1M in size pdf file.
