Hello

I am new to the forum and I joined 'cos I needed some clarification for the PCC. My wife is a US citizen and filed my I 130 in Feb 2010 (NoA1 was Feb 17th).

Now to the questions:

(i) Is the PCC some kind of seal/ stamp on the passport OR is it some kind of paper certificate, independent of the passport ?

(ii) My hometown (and all home addresses in the I 130 application) is my home address in Trivandrum. However, I have been living in Bangalore for the past 4 years. Do I need a PCC from Trivandrum or Bangalore or both ? (The address in the passport is my Trivandrum address as well)

(iii) Do you submit your passport while applying for the PCC ? Or do you only submit copies of the relevant pages ?

(iv) What is the timeline for gettin the PCC once the application has been submitted ?

(iii) The rules say that I need a Police Certification from the District Police Officer as well, if the passport was issued prior to 6 months of the Police Certification application. Is this to be done as well ? (People I asked said that the one issued by the Passport Office was more than sufficient) If so, how ?

(v) When do we submit the PCC during the entire CR1 application lifecycle ? Is it (a) to be sent to NVC once NoA2 has been received or (b) to be kept aside and taken with you physically during the time of the interview or © both ?

I know these are detailed questions but I am in a unique situation and hence need all the help I can get. Any pointer/ tips/ advice would be highly appreciated!

Regards, and thanks in advance

You will need two PCCs for India before your case can be completed at NVC.

Smart thing to do is to get them while you wait for your NOA2.

The Police Clearance Certificate will come from the local police station of your current residence. This basically looks like a letter. Has your picture on it (or at least mine did), some stamps and a signature. For this, a copy of the passport was sufficient.

The Passport Clearance Certificate will be issued by your passport issuing Regional Passport Office. This one came with a stamp in the passport and a note saying the applicant was cleared for U.S. immigration purposes. Obviously, for this I had to submit my original passport.

My Police CC took 3 weeks and Passport CC took 1 week. This was in Calcutta.

Hope this helps.

The PCCs will have to be sent to NVC with your DS230/IV packet.

Thanks a lot for your time and effort Sachinky.

If you could just answer this one question as well, as best as you can - it would be great

Q.)When do we submit the PCC during the entire CR1 application lifecycle ? Is it (a) to be sent to NVC once NoA2 has been received or (b) to be kept aside and taken with you physically during the time of the interview or © both ?

Regards, and thanks a lot once again for your time

The ORIGINAL PCCs will be sent with the IV packet which will carry the DS230 form. The NVC stage starts once you have the NOA2.

It is recommended that a photocopy of the PCCs are carried to the interview.

A guide to the DS230 packet for Indian beneficiaries:

--Cover sheet for Immigrant Visa Bill of $400.

--Two (2) Passport Size Photographs of Beneficiary (Beneficiary's full name, and date of birth are written on back of both).

--DS-230 Part 1 completed and signed by beneficiary.

--DS-230 Part 2 completed by beneficiary, unsigned, as of yet, per instructions.

--Original Marriage certificate

--Photocopy of Marriage Certificate

--Original Birth Certificate

--Photocopy of Birth Certificate

--Original Police Clearance Certificate from Local Police Station, Calcutta

--Original Police Clearance Certificate from Regional Passport Office, Calcutta

--Photocopy of beneficiary's Indian passport.

Get on those PCCs ASAP. They are valid for 1 year for embassy purposes.

Thanks a lot Sachinky. All of my questions are pretty much clear now. But I just have one final query (sorry!)- isn't sending the originals risky?(be it PCC or marriage certificate or birth certificate). I am sure they would give it back eventually but it just seems a tad risky to me. What if they lose it ? But I guess if these are specific instructions, then there is no two ways about it.

The originals will be returned to you at the time of the interview.

Nothing you can do but send them into NVC if you want your case to be completed.

A lot of people have tried to get away with photocopies or notarized copies but they've all been RFE-d for those documents.

Only ORIGINAL/CERTIFIED COPY is acceptable to NVC.

Sachinky,

When you went to the District Police Office and asked them for a Police Clearance Certificate, was it immediately recognizable to them what you were asking for? Or did you have to give them a lot of explanation to them about what you needed - and that it was something for immigration to the USA?

What exactly are the contents of the PCC (meaning what does it say on the certificate)? Will it list all names ever used by the person including Married Name and Maiden Name?

Once I told them that I required a PCC for U.S. immigration purposes, they knew what I was looking for. Gave me the form. Told me what to bring.

Btw, this is done from the Additional SP's office.

Hey Bobbyk

Just to add a little more info for you, the website of your state's passport office will have the required form for PCC and reqd docs etc listed. The same way your state police or district SP office's website should also have the particular form. Check it out. (I got both the forms from the websites of my respective offices). Good luck.
