I am just wondering when switching my driver's lic over from Canadian to American is it just a matter of changing the actualy lic. or do I have to take any tests? Also, from what I am reading and from what my lawyer has stated I will not be able to change my lic nor my vehicle registration over until I receive my A.O.S., right? How does the insurance thing work if this is correct? If I am over in the U.S. and can not return, does my insurance (car) still cover me? Does that mean I have to make a lump sum to keep the coverage going? What if something (knock on wood) happens? What about the plates and renewing them? Many questions???

hopefully (actually I know from previous questions) that somebody has the answers.

Hi Sue,

It all depends on what state your in.

In PA I got my DL without AOS being complete. I had to bring my Social Security card, marriage cert, passport, a form I had to fill out, my Canadian DL and Varba's passport and Varba.

I did not have to do a test in PA. However some states require it.

Like I said, all depends on what state.

12/31/2009 - Marriage

07/21/2010 - AOS approved

08/04/2010 - Green Card received (and it's actually green!)

05/30/2012 - Sent ROC packet to VSC

06/08/2012 - Received NOA1 for ROC (Dated 06/04/2012)

it really depends on your state. some require and SSS others do not. In chicago, i know i will have to have an SSS and i'll have to take the written test.

In California, Canadians are required to take the written and behind-the-wheel test over just like a new driver. I'm not sure about plates yet -- I'm heading to the Sacramento airport next Monday to import my car, then will attempt to register my plates on Wednesday. I will bring my Canadian & California driver license, social security card, marriage cert, passport, J-1 visa paperwork, and proof of having filed AOS and hopefully that will be enough for them. I think they'll be more than happy to take my money!

I think my car needs to have a smog test too. I'm going to call their MIS-information line this week (several times) and see what they have to say... and then average out the different answers and come to my own conclusion.

Some states, such as NJ, will not give you a license until you have a green card.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard
