Hi,

We are looking to transfer money from our UK account to my account in the US. Can anyone recommend a company to go with? I have looked into www.ukforex.com and www.xe.com. Just wondering if anyone had any good or bad experiences with them. Or if there are others to look into.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

What about the uk bank itself? A Wire Transfer or TT ???

If the conversion rate is onerous, then a 3rd party service might make sense.

But, I'd start at the UK bank, inquire about Wire Transfer / TT .

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

I looked into using my own bank (Halifax) they seem to be rather expensive with their charges and didnt have a very good rate of exchange at the time I looked. I also looked at xe and forex as they seem to give better exchange rates if you are transferring over a certain amount. I'll be interested to see the responses on this thread as using 3rd parties to transfer money scares me a little and it's good to 'know' people who have had positive experiences.

I was just looking at the exchange rates for my christmas trip and it looks rather bleak!! Down to $1.57/£ today :(

I have accounts with both HSBC and Lloyds TSB. Both wanted to charge and neither of their rates were as good as UK Forex, so I went with them. Took 5 days from when I transferred the money from my UK account to receive it into my US account (via UK Forex).

Thanks for posting everyone; David and I have been looking into this as he'll have about 10,000 pounds to transfer over.

I feel like we're in a little catch-22 for exchange rates, lol, since he has about 12,000 pounds in student loans so if the rate goes up to $2 per pound, that will make it $24k, but if it's like it is now, it's only about $19k...

I feel kinda like just using that money to pay his loans off, but my own student loan is like $15k and I pay about $80 in interest on it each month whereas he currently pays no interest at all for the moment and when the interest rates go back in September, it'll be much, much less than what I pay now.

Ah, well. In a year or two, it'll all be a memory :) I just don't like having it hang over me, which is a good motivator to get out of it.

Do any british banks have branches over here? I thought Citizens was part of Royal bank of Scotland but it dosnt seem to translate into being able to transfer money from RBS acct to Citzens acct or waive any fees.

HSBC are one bank with branches in both UK and US. I was thinking of using them for transferring money from UK to US - but didn't like their fees. Instead, I will be using UKForEx - will be doing the transfer this coming week, so I will let you know how I get on.

This is their website:-

http://www.ukforex.com/

You register both your UK and US accounts - then when the time comes to transfer, just push the button. Their rates are about 1 cent less than the published rate on the currency exchange (banks are about 5 cents lower). Plus, there are no fees for the first transfer.
