Hi folks,

I'm wondering, have any of you have crossed with a faxed copy of the compliance letter from the manufacturer when importing a vehicle? I called the Peace Bridge USCBP directly and the officer said it was OK, but I'd like to hear personal anecdotes just to be sure.

Please feed my paranoia. :D

You'll be denied and subject to a 10 year ban. How's that? :P

 That's SO funny!

Are you asking Spoom if a faxed copy is okay instead of the original? I would think as long as it has your name on it, and the make and model of your car, that should be okay. Why wouldn't it?

GM faxed me a copy, and mailed me the original. My POE made a copy and told me I needed the original for the DMV in the state in which I am registering my car. Two officers worked on my importing papers, they hadn't done one in a while and they had to bring out the manual! LOL The one officer told the other one who was making the copies to make sure he returned to me the original. If they are just going to make a copy, the POE that is, I would maybe call the DMV and ask if a copy of the compliance letter was ok or if it has to be the original? Just a thought. Good luck.

Well, at this point I'm only worried about USCBP's acceptance of the faxed copy; whether or not I need it later once I'm inside the country doesn't matter as much as I can get my parents to mail it to me.

The original copy of the compliance letter didn't make it to my parents house in time. I used the faxed copy at the POE and had no problems!

Good luck on your POE!

My car may already be in the US when I do my POE.....I am planning on going down to the US to spend christmas and New Years with my fiance and since I am hoping *fingers crossed* to stay for approx 2 months. I am thinking that my interview will be scheduled in that time. So I plan on flying from the US to Montreal for my interview, then going to hang out with my family while I wait for the Visa to be mailed, then fly back to the states. Will I be able to import my car at my POE without the car physically being there? Or will I have to do it at a later date.

I crossed at the Peace Bridge and did not import my car. I called the POE directly because I knew I wasn't going to get my letter in time. I asked if I can import my car at a later date, and the answer was YES. So American Honda is sending my compliance letter to my US address, and I'll have to figure out how I'm importing my car down here. Boston is a POE, but I think maybe it can be done through the motor vehicle registry.

Peace Bridge, anyway, wouldn't deny you entry if you didn't import your car. Therefore, you should be able to try the faxed copy, and if it's not accepted, say you'll import it at a later date when you have the paperwork. Might be worth calling the POE before about if this would work, but the answer should be the same. If you want to be safe, to avoid being denied entry because of an aborted import attempt, just import it later.

When I called Nissan to get mine they informed me they ONLY issue faxed copies of it. I had no problems with it at the border.

sorry to be bumping an old thread but when i crossed last saturday nothing was done with my car they looked at it and said go to the dmv in the state and if anything declare it at customs at the nearest airport, what was supposed to happen at the POE? i had a compliance letter that i showed them and they walked around with it for a while and that was that. the officer that activated my visa did take the make model and Vin # so i'm stuck as to what to do now since i can't do anything until my SSN card gets here, Ohio requires it for license and tags/registration of my car. Technically if i go to the DMV they do an out of state inspection and call it done but the problem is the car was never "officially" imported to my knowledge anyways. I don't want to encounter problems visiting Canada and what not.

When you register your car, you need to have the documents that they give you when you imported it. So you need to go to your nearest customs place and have them fill out the paperwork. This all should have been done when your visa was activated. Did you tell them that you wanted to import your car?

My husband's letter didn't come in on time when we crossed, but we were able to import his car when he entered because fortunately, his car had the proper sticker under the hood. The officer asked that when we got the letter from Mazda to mail him the original. Since we had ours emailed to us, there was no original, so I mailed him a printed copy of the emailed letter. We haven't heard anything back from them, so I guess it was ok. I guess we'll find out when he goes to register his car this week....

Thanks for bumping this thread cause it reminded me that we need the letter from Mazda to register his car! I would have totally forgotten all about it...

i did tell them i wanted to import it and they didn't do anything, i gave them the letter i had from Kia and everything and like i said they just walked around with it LOL one of the officers just told me that all they could do was just stamp it that they saw it and it was ok but nothing to do with the importation of it mind you now it was a Saturday and the "guy" who does it wasn't there but i figured someone would have looked it up to do it. By the sounds of it from the DMV they just do a check on the Vin and issue the tags but i don't know if thats the correct way for me to do it, Just trying to do things right.
