OK, Im sure this has been answered a million times before, but I just spent 20 minutes searching for the info and couldn´t find it.

On DS156 question 14 National Identification Number

In El Salvador we have a number on our ID card, just like in the States. Is that what this is? From the example form it sounds like some countries have them and others don´t, so how do we know if what we have on our licenses here is what they are asking for?

Thank you!!!

Yes national ID card number if the country you are from has national IDs.

And NO  it is NOT the same as the USA, WE DO NOT HAVE NATIONAL IDs IN THE USA. We do have state ID's but they are optional.

Oh, yeah, I guess you are right, that would be more like our SSN in the States. But here in El Salvador, there aren´t SSNs but rather a number you are issued when you get your National ID card when you turn 18 years old, so in that way it is like drivers lisences in the States, as opposed to SSN, a number you are given at birth. So, just to clarify, the number on the ID card issued in El Salvador, when the person turns 18, THAT IS THE NATIONAL ID NUMBER? OR IS IT ONLY SOMETHING LIKE A SSN given at birth?? Thank you!!!

El Salvador

In El Salvador, ID Card is called Documento Unico de Identidad (DUI) (Unique Identity Document). Every citizen above 18 years must carry this ID for identification purposes at any time. It is not a chipped card, but a bar-coded one with picture and signature.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Identity_document#El_Salvador (Should have a number on it, just enter that number on the DS-156)
