Hello all!

Me and my hubby applied for the I-130 and I-129F. I've been reading a lot of stuff about the visa process. But one thing is still bothering me. When your interview for the visa has been confirmed, do you need to have the medical examination beforehand? I read that they usually take a blood test for the HIV and then a general check up. I also know that a vaccination for the HPV and some others has to be taken. But is herpes simplex 1/2 tested at all or does it matter if you do have it? Because I haven't heard that based on the results of the medical examination, the visa has been denied. If someone knows and has the same kind of concer, answers are very much needed! :)

I wish you all the best for your journey!

The medical examination is under the jurisdiction of the US Embassy. If you pass the medical, you can go ahead with your interview. From what I've heard, the consul will only be asking questions about the authenticity of the relationship, and not about the results of the medical.

It all depends on passing the medical. The medical examiner will ask about any sexually transmitted diseases so even if they won't physically examine you for it, you would still have to answer that question.

Hey daisychain,

Good to know. Can you tell me what did they basically test when you went to this medical examination? Thanks again.

They're testing for communicable diseases, like HIV, Tuberculosis, stuff like that. I don't think Herpese Simplex is as much a concern.

You will undergo blood test for HIV, X-ray for TB, Urine for pregnancy (and drugs, I assume) and of course, the medical interrogation where they would ask questions such as "have you ever taken drugs?", "have you ever attempted suicide?" "do you have diabetes?", "do you have a sexually transmitted disease", etc.

From what I've observed, their number one concern is HIV and TB.

After you'll receive your NOA2 and the Embassy gets all your papers from the States they will send you a letter telling you what all you need to get for the interview. It also has very specific instructions about the medical, who to contact etc. You will do everything before the interview.

I didn't have to do a pregnancy test, I don't think they do that in Finland. They asked some funny questions like have I ever had leprosy, haha..

Good luck and no worries, it will go well!

Can one take vaccinations at this medical checkup or needs to do beforehand?

In addition, it seems that the only vaccinations required are:

1. Td/Tdap

2. MMR

3. Varicella

Am I missing any required vaccinations? If one has already taken them in lifetime, is one required to those vaccines again?

Thanks for your help :)

If you've had the vaccines and have record of them, then no you don't necessarily need them again, except possibly the T&D if it was more than 10 years ago, you'll need a booster.

if you don't have record of them, then your regular family doctor can draw blood to do titre tests to check your immunity levels. If you need any vaccinations you can have your regular family doctor do them, and take the record of them to your medical exam. They'll be cheaper (in some countries free) if done by your family doctor, but will cost a small fortune if you have the immigration doctor do them.

DON'T!!! I made the same mistake. I wanted to have my vaccinations beforehand. My doctor charged me P7,000 for the HPV vaccine and P1,700 for MMR. I also had my Td/Tdap vaccine. Turns out the vaccinations are included in the cost of the medical ($213). Not only that, the doctor overcharged me probbaly thinking i'm filthy stinking rich because I'm married to an American. The HPV vaccine only costs P5,000 in the drug store and she charged an extra P500 for administering the vaccine (which didn't take more than a minute). I visited my doctor twice and she only charged P300 for consultation for his other patients. When I asked his secretary about it, she said the doctor decides how much to charge. Not only that, the doctor even quipped, "Ask your husband to send you dollars!" ARRRGGGG.

I also want to add that I was referred to psych evaluation cus of a scar in my wrist and the consul never brought it up. So I guess the medical doesn't really affect k-3 visa approval, except if it's HIV. Should TB be the case, they won't give you the go signal for the interview until you've been treated (usually 2-3 months, I believe).

In relation to my previous post (though irrelevant to this thread), when my husband lived here in the Philippines, I always told him to zip his mouth and let me do the talking whenever we road a taxi or bought something from a store. He was overcharged (like quadruple the amount) on many occasions because they picked up on his American accent. Ie., when he bought pack of cigarettes with 10 sticks from a vendor, he was charged P75 for something that should've only cost P10!

Thank you so much for detailed answers. I will check how much vaccines would cost with family doctor. It would be good to take it at various intervals than all at a time. If expensive, we can wait for the medical interview to take it in already included price.

daisychain - That american accent thing also happens in India. Even when I go to India from US, they can tell that I am from US somehow even though I dress Indian :)

Hello, I don't think that they will test you for Herpes simplex 1/2.....but if you want to know exactly what tests are gonna be done when you go to Medical Examination, just go to the US Embassy's website in your country and you can download the forms that the doctor will use for the tests in your country. I did it when I brought my fiance and I was able to see what kind of tests are required. Herpes simplex was not there but requirements for each country may not be the same.

Good luck and don't worry!!!!!!

I'd agree with not testing for Herpes. I'd also have to say that there may be differences between countries? I don't think they can test for immunities, or why would they make you get the vaccines if there is No record? I'm not a doctor! In the Philippines, the Medical Exam always comes before the Interview.

As daisychain said above, the vaccinations were included at the St. Lukes Medical Exam, excepting tetanus which wasn't available in the Philippines. My wife had No records of vacinations for her or the children. They got all of them that St. Lukes could administer. In fact, it seemed to be discouraged to get vaccinations specifically for Immigration purposes. Does this apply to all countries, I don't know.

That said, one dose of some of the vaccines isn't enough. You will need more in the USA to complete some of them. Some can require at least four doses over a period of years. It doesn't stop Immigration, but you can be required to submit proof, in a sealed envelope from a doctor, that you got them. Most County Heath Departments will do it at cost or even for free sometimes. Some doctors will do the required paperwork or free, or little charge. Just the vaccination card from the health dept isn't enough.

If you think the Consular Official doesn't look at the Medical Results, think again. My wife told the Medical Examiners that she had four children, our papers only showed the three that were Immigrating. We didn't hardly make it to the second window at the Embassy before we were questioned about why. Not a big deal, they were actually more interested in making sure the fourth was documented, in case she ever wanted to immigrate. At the time nobody thought she would, Thank Goodness, because now she does want to Immigrate. See, they aren't all bad!

That's my experience the last three years. I think I saw somewhere that they require four more vaccinations now, that weren't required before...

Cheers...

Yes, the results of the medical examination can cause a visa denial but not for herpes. You can fail the drug test or have HIV with denial consequence. Perhaps other serious communicable deseases would have a similar result. It's a pass fail exam for all practical purposes.
