Consulate Review: Hong Kong, China
Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : October 30, 2010
Embassy Review : My interview was at 8:30 and arrived the embassy at 8:10. Security checked my bag at the entrance and requested my interview letter to check against his list of immigrant visa applicants. Allowed to go inside the building and walked pass the metal detecting machines, all bags were needed to go through the x-ray machines. Electronic devices were kept by the security.

Went upstairs to 1/F and waited in the interview room where there were 4 counters. There were 3 other intending immigrants there waiting already. Another 4 came in after me. Counters opened at 8:30 and officer called us to submit all necessary documents according to the checklist given by the security at the entrance. Around 9:00 the officer played a video of “how to fingerprint”. At 10:00 the officer called my name and started interview. A Cantonese speaking lady talked to me for 15 minutes and asked the followings:
Who applies the visa for me?
What’s his name?
When and where was he born?
Where is he now?
What does he do?
When, where and how did we meet?
When did he immigrate to US?
When did he become a citizen?
When and where did we marry?
What do I do for a living?
Then she flipped through the photos that I submitted and she asked some questions about the pictures.
Finally she asked when I would leave if I was approved.
She also explained to me what I would expect to receive in the parcel if I was approved by the Consulate and asked me to take a seat and wait for fingerprinting and meeting the Consulate.

Waited for another 10 minutes and had fingerprinted.

At around 10:30 the Consulate (a US person) called me to the counter and asked:
Did I understand all the info stated on all the forms and swear all info are true, then asked me to sign on the DS-230.
Where is my husband now?
What does he do?
When I plan to leave if approved?
Then he said everything looks good and another officer would explain to me the procedures afterwards.

Another Cantonese speaking lady told me I was approved and told me to leave by a certain date, otherwise the visa would expire. She asked me to pay $25 dollars downstairs for the courier and expect to receive the parcel in 3-4 working days. Then I paid the courier on the ground floor and left the embassy at around 10:45.

Thank you to all the VJers who have helped answering my questions and support during the whole process. Hope these info help others who are preparing for their interview. Good luck to all of you!

Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
