Event Description
Review Date : October 13, 2009
Embassy Review : Thanks to follow VJ members' reviews and advice, I could prepare enough for the interview today and I was approved. I had positive experiences and officers, a consular (interviewer) and security guards were very nice and kind.

I arrived at the gate 7:40 a.m. for my interview at 8:30 a.m. Only 4 parties were waiting when the embassy gate opened at 8 a.m.

I had to leave my cellphone and other electric equipment at the security point before entering the building. I went through a security check similar to airports. Then I was guided to the visa section office entrance. I signed in and was given a clear folder and an instruction sheet stating the order of the documents for putting in the folder (DS-156, DS-156K, the second copy of DS-156, police report, medical report, EXPACK and supporting documents)

I got the number first. At 8:30 a.m. they started calling the numbers. I submitted the folder to a Japanese officer. After about 10 minutes, I was called again to the window and taken my fingerprints.

I was nervous because an American lady who took my fingerprints seemed to be having troubles by looking at the computer screen with follow officers. So, I started worrying that it could be something wrong with my data or something would be missing, etc.

I was called again by the same female officer and was told that she lost my fingerprints data due to the system error so she has to take it again. But it didn't work so another lady called me at a different window and it went OK.

Then I was called again by the first officer who received my documents returned most documents I submitted today and mailed to the embassy before interview. He also told me that I need to wait longer for the interview by a consular.

After 30-40 minutes my number was called to a different window and a male consular greeted me nicely with a good smile.

He asked me to do oath first then started asking questions:

1. What is your fiance's name?
2. What is his job?
3. How did you meet him?
4. How many times did you meet him?
5. Did he come to Japan?
6. Have you been married?
7. Has he been married?
8. Does he have children?
9. How old are they?
10. How do you communicate with him?
11. Please explain about your previous visas.

After the above questions, the consular said to me: "I approved your visa. Your passport with a visa stamp will be mailed to you within a week. Do you have any questions? Good luck on your marriage!"

I left the embassy visa office around 10 a.m.

Only thing I noticed is that the instructions about 5cm x 5cm photos in the packet 3 and the checklist on the embassy website were different. The instructions in the packet says that an applicant needs to send a photo with DS-230 to the embassy before making an appointment for the interview. On the other hand, the checklist on the web says that applicants should bring two photos to the interview. I thought I didn't need to bring another photo to the interview since I already mail it to the embassy but I was advised to put a photo on the first page of the DS-156 at the entrance area when I was given a clear folder. I had another photo with me so I didn't need to take it at the photo booth inside the embassy visa office. But if you get two photos and even if you already mail it to the embassy with DS-230 Part I, you had better bring another photo with you.

Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
