It went great! Just took like 5 min. Everybody here in Portland are so nice! The IO welcomed me with a big smile. She asked the usual questions about travel, and marriage. Just questions from the form. I told her I traveled to Mexico and that I had a speed ticket. She already knew about my trip and did not care about the ticket. She asked me to sign my pictures and at the end asked me the civics/history questions.
Who vetoes bills? The president
What is the Law of the Land? The Constitution
What is the Capital of my State? Salem
Who do we show loyalty to when we say the Pledge of Allegiance? The flag of the United States
Who did the US fight in World War II? Japan, Germany, and Italy
What is an amendment? An addition to the Constitution
For English test, she asked me to read: Where is the White House?
And write: The White House is in Washington, D.C.
I had my oath Ceremony that afternoon at 2 pm. There were 50 new citizens from 23 different countries. We registered to vote after the ceremony.
It went so fast I just cannot believe it is over! |

My fiance, my 15-years-old son and I arrived Montreal the day before, July 28th, from Toronto. Initially we were going to take the train, but Via Rail went to strike the weekend before and we had to buy bus tickets instead. At the end, the strike ended on Sunday! We decided to take the bus anyway.
We arrived 7 am to the consulate on July 29th. We were third in line. The door opened at 7:35. The guards were very nice and asked my fiance if he was my lawyer. When we said he was my fiance, he said "very well". We went trough check up, that took some time because we were three. We went trough the elevator and never had time to read the list of documents but was fine because the person that received the documents was very nice and asked which documents needed in a very orderly way. We went trough the documents, first mine and then my son's. He asked me if I had sole custody and I said that according with Mexican laws yes, but I brought a consent letter from his dad and he said that was great. I did not have a police record from Mexico because they are now unavailable, he went to ask and said it was fine. He did ask me for my status in Canada and required my permanent resident cards that fortunately I brought with me. He also asked me for my 2-year home requirement waiver since I was in the USA under J1 visa before. I also brought it with me, even if I got an H1b visa already approved after my J1. He asked me to pay the 131 while he was going to work on my documents. He took some time to return and said he had several corrections to make to the forms. I started to be nervous, but the corrections were only to write my new fiance's address because he moved 2 weeks ago to a bigger apartment and the DS-160 forms had the old address. In the meantime I was correcting the address in all the forms, he asked my fiance about his job. He was very professional and nice!
Then we were called to the window 8 for the interview. The diplomat was a young man, very very nice. He invited all of us to come in. Took the oath to the three of us and ask how we met and how. Then how many times we have visited each other since I moved to Canada. Then ask my son if he was happy to go to school in Portland, OR. In the meantime he was checking the documents. Then he ask who proposed and how. He was making jokes and looking at the pictures on the I-129 file. He went trough my son's dad letter and asked him his dad's name and where he lives and the last time he visited him. Then he said we were approved and that the visa will be ready someday this week, depending on the computers and we should received it anytime next week. He asked us to go and celebrate! We got out about 10 am and went to have a very good breakfast in the beautiful Montreal! |

My fiancé and I entered at Niagara Falls-Buffalo POE at rainbow bridge on August 14 2009. The officer asked us for passports and visa. He asked when we met and how and asked my fiancé when was the last time he was in USA. He was a little bit rude but everything went well. He call by the phone and asked us to park the car and go to the second floor of the building and gave us a white piece of paper with some code written on it. He kept our passports and told us to give the brown envelope to the officer when we our name would be called. We arrived there and found the waiting room pretty crowded. Someone told us that they start calling at 4 pm. After about 30 min of waiting, we hear our names and enter to a big area with many desks and officer, similar to the airports customs area. A very nice officer welcomed us and ask for the envelope. Then he asked us to take a seat while he processed the visa. After about 15 min, he called us again and took my picture and fingerprints. He asked if my son was comming with me. I responded that he would be meeting us within 3 weeks since he was in Mexico for vacation. He said it was fine and asked if he had his own visa and brown envelope and I responded that yes, thy gave him his own envelope. He gave us the same information about the K visa being valid for only 90 days and that we have to get married and change status before the 90 days. He asked us for $6.00 for visa processing and gave us our passports back. He was very professional and nice! The whole process took us about 2 hours. |

We had our interview for AOS on Portland, OR today December 2nd, 2009. We had the appointment at 8 am. We arrived to the office at 7:30 am. Found good parking across the street from Union Station, 2 blocks from the USCIS office. The guards were very nice. We pass the security screening, we can bring cell phones, bags and electronics. Just take them out the bags and pockets before going to security check. Then we went to room 106 and leave the appointment notices in a basket outside the room. Wait in the room to be called. At 8 o\'clock the officer took our appointment letters from the basket and called us. Very nice young officer. he greeted us and took us to his desk. He took us the oath and asked for our IDs (passports). He opened our big file that he already had and asked some questions: if I arrived on the day I said on the form, went to the Yes and No questions in the I-485 form. Asked if we had engagement rings, and we showed both engagement and wedding rings in our hands. Then asked us when and where we met, asked proof that we are living together, we gave copies of lease agreement, utilities bills, joined car title, bank accounts and insurance. He said everything was fine and that we had enough proof of our relationship and said the cards will arrive within 2-3 weeks in the mail. Everything took about 15 min! Kudos for USCIS Portland!!!

Timeline Comments: None yet, be the first!
*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the
USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
