Consulate Review: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : September 4, 2009
Embassy Review : I would give my experience 5 stars if the lady who helps you put your documents in order wasn't so rude (not to me but to most people there).

My interview was on August 27th and was schedule for 7:45am. I arrived at the consulate early, around 6:30. There were about 10 people already in line (the non-immigrant line). Since there was no one there for me to ask where the K1 line was, I just stood there with the other people. 5 minutes later I met a woman who was also a K1 and we went on a quest to find the other line. When we did, there was someone already there. We got into the building at about 7:20. Security check, up to the second floor.

Although I already had my documents in the right other, I took my time writing down my contact info in Rio so I was the 6th person to submit the documents. But I was the 3rd to be called to be interviewed.

I was as nervous as it gets. I got in. The consul was about 50 years old. He was direct and firm but polite. He asked me to sign the forms, took my fingerprints and the interview started. Questions:
1 - How did you meet your fiance?
2 - How did you get to see each other?
3 - Where does your fiance live?
4 - Has he always lived there?
5 - For how long did you live and what did you do in the United States?
6 - Can I see your NOA2? (NOT the I-129F Petition NOA2, he was talking about my NOA2 from my request to change status while I was in the US)
7 - How did he propose?
8 - Does he speak Portuguese?

Then he start typing something on the computer, which took a VERY LONG minute and he finally said "your documents seem to be in order, your visa will be approved". He didn'task for anything. No photos, no letters, phone bills, nothing. I had brought everything you can imagine but he didn't mind to check anything.

I do believe that once you get into that interviewing room, they already have made their decision. The interview is just to prove them right or wrong. I say that because when I got out of that room, someone already had the "green paper" (for those who have been approved) to give me. It had my info, which couldn't be written in less than 20 seconds. And the woman who handed it to me said "approved, right?". The interview is easy, they are only going to ask questions you can answer, about your relationship. If you have a bona fide relationship you'll most likely get that visa.

I was done and out of the consulate building by 9:30am. Super quick.

PS: The main problems I saw people having at the consulate were wrong pictures (you must show both of your ears!!) and not having the electronic version of the DS-156, so fill it out online!
Rating : Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
