Consulate Review: Tokyo, Japan
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : March 21, 2009
Embassy Review : I had a very positive experience at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo for my K-1 interview. Consular officers were super friendly.

8:25 > Entered the U.S. Embassy. Showed my ID(passport) to the guard in the front. Went through airport style security check. Security guards will take all the electronic item (cell phone etc.) and food/drink until you leave the embassy.

8:29 > Entered consular section. Showed my ID again at the front desk. Was given a number, a clear folder, and an instruction sheet to put all the required documents in certain order. The clear folder also included a small plastic bag to put one ID photo in.

8:30 > Took a seat at waiting area. There are 10 windows to the immigrant visa section - all of them were active. There is a restroom, an ID photo booth, a pay phone, and a vending machine (for drinks) adjacent to the waiting area. Started putting all the documents in order according to the direction given.

9:15 > After waiting for 45 minutes, my number was called. Went to one of the windows for document check. A Japanese officer checked if I had all the required documents, and opened the sealed documents including medical record and police certificate. The whole document check took 15 minutes.

9:35 > After waiting for 5 minutes, my number was called. An American officer took my fingerprints. Took a seat again after 5 minutes.

10:20 > It seems like only one window (#10) is used for interview purpose. Waited for 45 minutes to have my number called. Slightly surprised that the interview was done at a counter while standing. Consular officer (American) who interviewed me was very friendly. He initially asked me raise my right hand and swear (in Japanese) that all the statements that I made was true and complete to the best of my knowledge and belief. Then I signed DS-156k. All the questions were straightforward - How to pronounce my fiance's name, How we met, What my fiance does in the States, etc.. The officer also returned most of the original documents I submitted. At the end, the officer said "Congratulations, your visa is approved, and should arrive in about a week."

\(^o^)/ yipeee!

The whole interview part took only 5 minutes.

5 days later > My passport with K-1 stamp came on mail! Yay!!
Rating : Very Good

POE Review: JFK
Event Description
Entry Date : 2009-04-06
Embassy Review : 17:40 Arrived at JFK airport

17:50 Arrived at POE - Got in a line for visitor/visa-holder

18:05 POE/Primary inspection: Presented my passport and a yellow envelope (with K-1 application documents given by the US Embassy) to an immigration officer. The immigration officer opened the envelope, checked the content of the envelope and the visa stamp on my passport, wrote the alien number on my passport next to my visa stamp, and stapled a portion of I-94 on my passport.
I asked him if I can get my temporary employment authorization stamp, and he said I can get it in the secondary inspection. He then took my biometrics and guided me to the secondary inspection room.

The primary inspection took about 15 minutes, and I must say that the immigration officer was the most friendly (yet professional) officer that I encountered in the US POE!

18:20 Took a seat in the secondary inspection room, and my name was called within 30 seconds. After making sure that I am getting married within 90 days on entering the country, a new immigration officer gave me a temporary work authorization stamp on back of my I-94. The stamp was smudged and illegible, so I asked her to stamp it again - which she kindly did. I ended up with three stamps, which still were all barely legible (just a bad stamp or ink - not the officer's fault). Apparently the alien number on my passport is far more important than how legible the stamp is.

18:25 I was set to go within 5 minutes, with my passport and temporary work authorization stamp(three of them!).
Harassment Level : Low

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
