My interview happened on April 10th, 2023. I have some good points and some bad points to mention here.
BAD points first:
1- My fiance and I e-mailed them twice (first in november and then last week) to ask if he could accompany me during the interview. Both times they said yes. I printed the e-mails and brought with us. Getting there, the responsible person said he would have to wait outside. I questioned saying we had e-mails saying he could go in with me, then she said that not in a first moment, but they would call him in later. I found that reasonable, since there are some steps before the interview itself happen, so I asked her to guide him to where he was supposed to stay and she did. THEY NEVER CALLED HIM IN OR EXPLAINED ANYTHING TO HIM, and he told me there was a lot of other people in the same situations close to him.
2: That being said, I noticed that the Consulate seems to be understaffed, so everyone gets overwhelmed and their internal comminication tends to break. The person I mentioned above, for instance, was a tiny short girl running all crazy everywhere because she was handling everybody outside by herself. There was a loooot of people and no signs, nothing... Everything on her.
3: Informations in the official website is not very accurate. When I went to do the biometrics, I brought the appointment confirmation page printed, as the website days, but, getting there, what I needed was the DS-160 confirmation page. Had to pay R$30 to print one damn page in order to not lose my appointment. Besides that, the website says that the declaration that days you're free to marry is suposed to be signed in front of the officer, but when I handed my documents, the person was like "why you didn't sign it yet?".............
4: This might be a personal thing, but I think it's worthy to be mentioned. The ac is suuuuuper cold inside. I was wearing warm clothes and still felt cold a lot. So if you get cold easily, bring an extra jacket hahahah
Now the GOOD parts:
1: The whole process on this fase (except for the problems above), since biometrics, was very smooth and felt a lot different from when I tried a tourist visa in 2020, before pandemics. At that time, everything was extremely intimidating, but this time I felt like I was treated with dignity and respect most of the time. Everyone was very nice and the security guy in the interview waiting area was even joking a lot hahahah That helped me to relax.
2: Although I waited a long time before the interview itself happen, when it did it was very quick and easy. The Consul barely looked at me and didn't ask for any additional evidences of anything (I had a giant folder with me though). She asked me to swear I was saying the truth and then did these questions:
- Have you ever been in the USA?
- Have you ever been out of Brasil?
- Any problems with the law?
- When did you meet your fiance and how?
- When did he come to Brasil? (on this question I asked which time she wanted to know and she said the first)
- When is the wedding?
- Did you receive the paper with your rights in case of domestic violence?
Then visa approved!! ðŸ˜
3: They took only two days to issue my visa. |

Everything was very smooth for me at the Tampa airport. My fiance was with me and I brought my cat.
We had a connection flight at Panama and there was an extra security check there. I believe that's why the security at Tampa was very fast, with no lines. I don't know if it's the same when you come from other places.
We got to the airport and a lady speaking in english and spanish directed us for the non-citizen passport control line, which was really short. It was arround 5 minutes waiting only.
The first officer checked my passport, took a picture of me, asked for the address where I'm going to leave in the US and got my visa packet. She was very nice and laughed saying my packet was huge hahahah Then she gave my fiance's passport back to him and told me to follow her to a separated room. She told my fiance that he could go get out baggage and then come back to meet me in that room. I asked if my cat could go in with me, she said yes, told me to take a seat and handed my documents to another officer. There were two officers in that room, both very nice too, and a few other people (something arround 5). Apparently only I was there with a k1 visa, but I think it's their standard procedure for that type, because nothing seemed wrong to me at anytime.
My fiance couldn't get the baggage at that moment for some reason and came back to wait with me. We waited arround 20 minutes and the officer called me by my name. He asked if I could speak english, where I was comming from, If I had an address in the US to provide and If I was aware that if I didn't get married to my fiance in 90 my visa would be revoked. I responde everything and then he asked if he could speak to my fiance. I called him and, since he's asian, the officer asked me if he could speak english. So the officer asked him if he had a drivers licence and checked it, typed something on his computer and stamped my passport. In the meanwhile, some ladies that work in the airport arrived with some suitcases for us to see if ours were there, and they were.
Then the officer told us to pick it up and follow him to a separated area in the same room for security. He kept my packet and gave my passport to the security officer. This last officer said our luggage have been through x-ray before and he didn't need to check our carry-ons. He asked about my cat's documents, gave me my passport and said we could go home 😊
That's it! The whole process took less than 40 minutes and I was treated very well all the time. |

Timeline Comments: 9Hi Hello,
Good afternoon!
We noticed you just received your packet 3 email, from Rio de Janeiro consulate.
If you notice our timeline, it's the same. Unfortunately we haven't received the email yet.
What instructions do they contain?
I'm worried ours got lost somewhere.
Hopefully tomorrow we hear something.
Edtab on 2023-04-13 said: Hello AneB, May I ask you If you have received your visa yet? I did my interview in RIO on April 06 last week and didn't received my visa yet, got approved by the consular but the CEAC web site is showing "REFUSED".
May I ask you if yours is showing the same?
BTW congrats!!
AneB on 2023-04-13 said: Hi, Edtab!
Thank you 😊
They issued my visa yesterday and I got an e-mail saying I can already schedule to go pick it up. Sorry to hear that about you case... Maybe you should do an inquiry?
Hi there! Congrats on your visa! My fiance and I are going to his interview here in Rio Tuesday and his biometric appointment tomorrow morning, and I am wanting to know if when you went to your Biometric appointment and gave your DS-160 page to them, did you receive it back? I believe we will need that for the interview as well and I only have one copy printed. Also, if you have any other advice for us, it would be greatly appreciated!
AneB on 2023-05-22 said: Hi, AimeeB 😊
They did give me the DS-160 page back, but I would try to print one more copy, just in case. They're gonna ask for it at the interview too, so better safe than sorry 😊
My advice is double check everything to make sure you guys have everything, support each other and believe in your own story. The questions during the interview are very likely to be short and direct, so tell your fiance to go with flow.
Try to arrive early in both places and if things are taking too long or seem too confusing, don't be afraid to ask somebody who works there, let them know it's a k1 visa as soon as he gets to the waiting like outside.
Tell him to bring warm clothes to the Consulate, cause it's a long wait inside and it's really cold in there.
If you're intending to be with him for the interview, I hope it works out for you guys, but be prepared, both of you, for maybe not being possible.
Stay calm. Pay attention. Trust your love. Good luck!
Thank you so much for all your advice! My fiance is also wondering if they will be able to ask him the questions for the interview in Portuguese. Also, I know I probably won't be able to go into the actual interview with him, but is there a waiting room where I can wait inside the consulate? We just got back from the CASV appointment, so that is done and we just have the interview tomorrow! (:
AneB on 2023-05-22 said: You're welcome 😊 Yes, he can be interviewed in Portuguese. When I had mine, the Consul didn't even ask if I wanted it in english, she just did everything in Portuguese hahaha
About the waiting room, no, I don't think they have anything like that. My fiance had to wait outside, next to the exit gate. The good news is that there is shadow all over that area, it's super safe and there's some restaurants on the same sidewalk, so you won't die if they don't let you in hahahah
Okay! Obrigada! One more question! haha! What time was your visa appointment? Ours is at 8 am, so I'm hoping I will be able to go in because it's earlier and there might be less people, but I'm not sure.
AneB on 2023-05-22 said: Mine was 7:40h. I got there at 7:10h and there was already a lotttttttttt of people 😢
One more thing that I didn't say before: we have our time schedule, but once you're inside the Consulate, it's a "first come, first serve" system. So, as I said before, go early 😊
*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the
USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
