Elias interviewed on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 alone as I was unable to travel to Lima. He arrived at the Embassy at 7am for the interview that was scheduled at 8am. There were many people and arriving early is recommended. He needed to show the Form. 179 to enter and was asked to leave all electronics outside and was provided with a claim ticket to pick them up after the interview. When he entered a woman asked for the Form. 179 which she kept, he was told to have a seat inside where he would wait to be called to a window (windows 9-15 are for K-1 Visa). He was called first to window 14 where he was asked for all of the documents that he had in a specific order, the documents were scanned into a machine where the interviewer would later view them as electronic files. He was told to take a seat and wait to be called again for the actual interview. He was called over the speaker to go to window 15 (only window 9 and 15 are used for the actual interview). Once he entered he spoke with an American women whom he described as very serious (not very happy). She asked him questions. First, How do you know Samantha? He explained. Where did you meet her? He explained. When did you see her last? He responded. Does she work and if so where? He responded. Is she capable of supporting herself? He responded. Do you have children? To which Elias responded I have spiritual children. (I could have choked him for this one) She asked him what he meant by that, was he a Christian? He responded, yes. She asked do you have children with a woman? He said, No. Elias was then advised that because we were still waiting on the certificado policial de antecedentes judiciales INPE (which we knew would be problem because it was not going to be ready in time for the interview but he had been told to pick up at 9am on the same day of the interview) that he would need to send it back to the embassy via DHL in San Isidro. He was also asked to send back copies of the Affidavit of support, my 2007 taxes and a copy of my 2007 W-2 (please note this interview was scheduled before April 15) which somehow had never been scanned in. She then said look at me and she gave an example of how she wanted him to place his fingers for the electronic fingerprints. He took the prints. She then said, "okay that's everything sir. Please take this yellow slip, read it and return the items that are marked (along with the passport) via DHL. If everything is in order when we receive the documents the Visa will be granted, if more information is needed we will notify you.
Elias left the embassy, picked up the police certificate that we were missing, and packaged all of the documents (including the financial documents that somehow were skipped over) and sent it all back by DHL the same day. The embassy received the documents on Wednesday, March 19, 2008. The embassy was closed Thursday and Friday for Holy week. Monday the documents were reviewed and on Tuesday, March 25h Elias called DHL and was asked for the tracking number of the package he had sent (i had the same tracking number for the return package). He was advised that he had a package there at DHL waiting for him. He went and pciked it up and inside was his Visa stamped as approved on March 24, 2008.
He said that all in all his experince was good and that he was treated well, even by the serious woman as she was still kind. Even with the delay and my stress about the confusion on the financial documents were were pleased with the embassy. They do tend to be a bit disorganized and I caution others to make sure everything is in order(we were missing a couple of forms, which we downloaded from Visa Journey, in our packet 3/4). |
