Comments : There was some delay on the receipt of the Instructions (Pkt 3). The embassy sent the package to the wrong house number in Brazil and Fernando never got the packet. We had to call the embassy after waiting a month or so and had the packet resent. We shouldn\'t have waited so long to call them, but we just didn\'t know how long it would take.

Fernando lived in Canada for about 2 years and it was required that he get a police report from Canada for his K1 visa. We waited 4 months for the police report after sending them official fingerprints from Brazil and a US money order...another delay.

Our K1 interview was only about 10 minutes in Rio de Janeiro. Fernando was asked minimal questions on how we met, and why we wanted to marry in the US, and what were our wedding plans. That\'s it. We were out of there in an hour and a half total and had to return later that day to get his passport with the visa. Smooth sailing!

We were married in the U.S. in a private ceremony on February 2006 as per the immigration requirements, we call that our "paperwork wedding". We had another more formal wedding and reception in September 2006, renewing the vows from February. Finally, we had a third wedding in Brazil in January 2007. Three weddings! We've had a realatively smooth process.

Embassy Review : I attended the K1 visa interview w/ my Brazilian fiance in Rio. The whole process took us about 1.5 hours. After going through security we went upstairs to the immigration unit and were given a list of how they wanted our paperwork presented. Once our paperwork was in order, we waited in line with about 20 others, presented the paperwork to an agent at the window, and waited to be called for the interview. We were called about 30 minutes later.

Our interview lasted about 10 minutes. The consulate was actually born in my home town in the US! He asked me about my profession and how many times I visited Brazil. He asked my fiance how we met and started dating and why we didn't just get married in Canada where we met or in Brazil, if he was generally healthy and what were our plans for our wedding. That was it. We were told to come back at 3pm to pick up the visa and a sealed package of our paperwork that is to be presented upon entry into the US.

Advice: Make sure your ears are showing in your photographs!! A lot of women were delayed that day because they had to get their photos retaken from a vendor outside the embassy. So, make sure you follow all directions and have extra copies of your paperwork because you don't get it back.

Also, you have to pay Citibank the $100 interview fee and get a receipt. The Citibank is a short walk from the embassy. They do not accept US dollars unless you have a Citibank account.

Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
