Event Description

Embassy Review : ~The interview was held at the San Fernando Valley office~

Our appointment was scheduled for 8:55am, it said in the notice to not show up more than 15 min prior to appointment so we walked in to the building at 8:40am, after parking in the structure right across the street. We stood in line outside with a bunch of people and around 8:50, an officer came out and mentioned some quick things with Covid restrictions and the TSA security we all had to go through before entering the office. He checked my ID and the interview notice and then let my husband and I walk in to go through the security. After that, we walked into this big waiting room and lined up to be checked in. The person checking us in took my fingerprints (index fingers only) and a picture and then gave us a number, told us to have a seat and wait for our number to be called.

We waited for almost an hour before our IO came out and called our number. He apologized about the wait and led us back to his office. We were sworn in and then he asked to see our originals (marriage cert., both our passports, birth certs. and my previous EAD cards). He then asked my husband to verify his full name, DOB and asked if he was still employed by *name of his employer*. He was putting in some information and then asked me for my full name, DOB and parents first names. After that he started explaining that we would receive the conditional green card (we’ve only been married for about 6 months, been a couple for 3 years) and my husband just asked a question or two since he wasn’t familiar with the difference and how to do ROC. Our IO said if we got into the habit of collecting evidence to send in by the time we need to remove conditions, we should be approved without a second interview. He also complimented how thorough my applications were and said it didn’t leave a lot of room for questions. He also asked if I really didn’t have help from someone (like an attorney or anyone knowledgeable with the process) to fill out everything, to which I proudly said no. I used the guides posted here on VJ but I didn’t tell him that, haha.

After going over the ROC process with us, he mentioned I should apply for a new SS-card since the one I have now says something about “work only allowed if authorized by DHS” (I got it when I first received my EAD for OPT years ago) and then asked if we had any questions for him. I wanted to ask “don’t you have questions for us??” but obviously I didn’t. We said no, we got our questions answered. He thanked us for coming in, said we were approved and said the GC should be arriving in the mail within 6-10 days. He said he was swamped in the morning but the approval should show up on the portal later that afternoon. It was updated the day after, and my GC is currently in the mail and should be here by the end of the week.

Overall, I had a 10/10 experience. Obviously I was so nervous before (not my husband, he was calm haha) but we were both surprised how smooth it went and that he didn’t ask any questions at all about our relationship. Not how we met, how he proposed or anything about our daily life. We’re very happy to be able to start our lives together for real now that I’m a resident and can work and travel again! Oh and we were called back at 9:55am and the interview was over by 10:14am... So it took less than 20 minutes!

-it said in the notice that if you’re fully vaccinated, you will not need to wear a mask inside the office but if you’re in the LA area, you still have to. They never checked our vaccination status so you don’t have to be vaccinated to attend the interview. My husband and I don’t mind wearing masks but just a heads up as it says in the notice you won’t have to wear one.

Harassment Level : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
