Consulate Review: Montreal, Canada
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : August 27, 2021
Embassy Review : Great experience, easy process!

My interview was at 9:15am on Wed, Aug 25, 2021. I got to the consulate at 9am and there was already a line of 5-6 people. I stood in line and at exactly 9:12, the line hadn’t moved at all so I skipped the people in front to talk to an officer inside the building about my interview time and he told me to wait on the side. The other people in line had interviews for 9:30/9:45 when I asked them. At 9:14am, I asked the officer again and he let me inside after asking for my name to check on their list.

Went through airport style security and I was allowed to put my phone (turned off) and AirPods in a tiny locker (like the size of those community mailboxes). Locked it up and took the key with me. I didn’t bring a purse with me, only a giant clear zip file bag where I put all my docs, and wallet. I was told to see window 5 upstairs so I took the elevator to the consulate floor (marked on the elevator button pad).

On the floor, I went to window 5 where I gave my passport (original and color copy) and was given a ticket with my number on it. They also took my fingerprints and told me to sit down to be called again. I sat down in the spacious waiting room. There were tv screens with beeps every few minutes showing the ticket number and window to go to. I noticed a lot of other people kept their purses on them so don’t worry too much about whether you can keep your bag or not! There's also a bathroom right next to where we can wait on the same floor.

I waited a few more minutes and then my number was called again and for window 4. This time I also gave my birth certificate (original and copy), I-134 (original), police certificate (original), 2 passport photos (they kept them) and the courier receipt. After that, they gave me a domestic violence pamphlet and told me to sit down and wait again. I didn’t bring a watch and the clock in the room was broken so I had no clue of how much time was passing.

After what felt like an hour, my number finally showed on the screen again and I went to my window. Felt super nauseous at this point from all my nervous energy. My interviewer was very friendly and asked for the supporting docs for the I-134. I gave him the I-134 supporting evidence (EVL and a few months of paystubs. My fingerprints on my left hand were taken again. He asked me to take an oath that all the information I had given him was true and asked if I read the domestic violence pamphlet.

He asked the following questions to the best of my memory:
- how did you and your fiancé meet?
- what is your fiancé’s name?
- what work does your fiancé do?
- where does your fiancé live? Is it a house? Is that where you will live?
- who lives with your fiancé?
- what do you do for a living?
- when did you last see each other in person?
- how long was the longest visit and when? Have you ever overstayed in the US?
- have you visited anywhere outside of Canada/US in the last 5 years?
- have you ever been outside of Canada/US in your life and if so, where did you go?
- have you ever been arrested in any country?
- have you ever been denied entry to the US?

After all those questions, he said he intended to approve my visa and gave me the pink paper and another paper on how to check the status of my visa. He said it would take 3-4 weeks for me to receive my passport. Only my birth certificate was given back and the interview was done! I took the elevator downstairs, collected my phone and AirPods from the locker and left. Messaged my fiancé I was approved at 10:52am. So the entire process took approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes.

A lot of the supporting docs I brought just in case were not asked for such as:
- fiancé’s birth certificate, passport and drivers license (all photocopies)
- proof of relationship (plane ticket)
- Fiancé tax forms, W2
- DS-160 confirmation page
- P4 interview email
- fiancé letter of intent

Rating this consulate a 4 and not a 5 because of the lack of a working clock and how even though my interview was at 9:15, it took almost 2 hours to actually process.

On Friday, Aug 27, I received an email from them with my Purolator tracking info that my visa packet was on the way. It seems like it'll arrive sometime Monday!

POE Review: Toronto
Event Description
Entry Date : 2021-09-26
Embassy Review : Entered on K1 Visa at Pearson Airport in Toronto

US security opens at 6:15 am. US customs opens at 6:30am. There was already a line of people waiting for security to open up when I got there around 5:45am. I had gotten an SSSS on my boarding pass when I checked in back in Edmonton so when it got to my turn, I had to do some extra steps for security. I had to take out all my electronics (usual procedure) and then they opened my carry on bags and swabbed the insides. Nothing super intense. No pat downs or physical checks like I've read elsewhere online, which I was most worried about. After they swabbed my bags, they gave them back to me and my boarding pass was stamped. Make sure you have this stamp if you got SSSS on your boarding pass or it'll be trouble at the gate!

Proceeded to go to Customs section. They had a new procedure for nexus/global card holders. No need to enter info or scan my card on the machines anymore - I only had to have my picture taken and they printed out my info (name, dob, passport number). I guess they used the retina scan. Nexus line was quite short. When it was my turn, I gave my packet to the officer and he wrote K1 on my nexus receipt, returned my packet and told me to line up again in a different line nearby. Stood in that line for a bit. When it got to my turn again, it was the same officer. Since he already knew who I was, it was really quick and he guided me to secondary screening. It's a big room with a lot of chairs and 2 officers working at the counters. There is a water fountain and bathrooms within the area. The officer took my passport and boarding pass and told me to sit down until I was called. Everyone who was already there all got called up one by one, very slowly, and left. Air Canada and United airline attendants would come every few minutes asking if anyone was flying with them, then take down their info. I guess they were making sure to hold the plane so no one would miss their flight.

When it finally came to my turn, there were 18 people waiting who entered after me. I gave my packet to a new, different officer and he looked through some things I couldn't see over the counter. He asked me if I understood the stipulations of the visa (marry within 90 days, can't leave, must stay in country until I get admitted for green card etc.). He didn't ask any personal questions at all. I waited in that room for about over an hour until my turn. If you have a connecting flight like me, make sure to leave enough time during layover. My layover was 2.5 hours and I would have missed my flight if the flight attendants didn't check on us and they ran things normally (ie. no other missing passengers, delayed planes etc.).

Process overall was easy, just a lot of waiting. I was worried for nothing!

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
