Consulate Review: Guangzhou, China
Review Topic: General Review
Event Description
Review Date : October 19, 2020
Embassy Review : My wife got to the gate surrounding the consulate area and went in @ 7:40AM/7:45AM. Then, she waited in line outside the consulate building and entered the building @ 8:40AM/8:45AM. When it was all over, she came out of consulate around 11AM. Before the interview, she was asked to submit these documents:
- Appointment letter
- Police certification of no criminal record
- Birth certificate
- Marriage certificate
- Petitioner’s 2019 tax return

She also took an oath of truth by raising right hand and had her fingerprints scanned. She also received a small pamphlet she had to read before continuing with the process. The pamphlet was basically about what to do if you are in the US and become a victim of domestic violence. It also includes punishment for having a sham marriage just to go to the US. Then came the interview. Her interview was conducted in Chinese, because her English isn't great, but it did not seem to be an issue with the interviewer, as many other people needed to conduct the interview with a translator too. During the interview, she was asked these questions:
- What is your spouse’s name?
- Is this the first time being married for both of you?
- What is your spouse’s job?
- What is your joint sponsor’s name?
- What is your joint sponsor’s job?
- How did you and your husband meet?
- What university?
- Is your English good?
- Is your husbands’ Chinese good?
- Are you a member of the Communist Party?

After these short, simple questions, the interviewer told her congratulations, and that she had passed her interview.

During the interview, which is basically in a bank teller window-like scenario, you can hear the other interviews going on around you. My wife recalls two specific cases that were rejected due to a misspelling in a name on some document and some document that wasn't brought. Many people were not prepared well enough document-wise, so the main thing is that you need to print EVERY document you've submitted and the originals of the civil documents. Most of them will not be used, but the ease of mind you can have by being over-prepared is worth it. It would be a good idea to have a few copies of the appointment letter, because that was also taken by the health exam center and we had to print another copy off at 5RMB per page.

As far as my wife remembers, the people she submitted documents to, interacted with and had the interview with were all pleasant people to work with, and there was no complaints as far as any consulate staff goes.
Rating : Very Good

Good luck! I see Guangzhou has been pretty active about scheduling interviews, so I hope you receive some good news soon. :) Our interview is in a couple of days, so we are pretty excited.

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
