Consulate Review: Mumbai, India
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : December 4, 2019
Embassy Review : I had my k1 visa interview on Nov 29th 2019 and reached the embassy at 6.30 AM for 7.15 AM appointment. We were asked to wait until they call for immigrant visa people to form a line near the waiting area of the consulate and then they called the immigrant visa applicants to form a line at 6.55 AM( Small Tip: Try to get as early as possible in the line as you they send you inside the consulate general as per your order in the line). I was the 3rd in line and asked to take out my passport and embassy interview letter for initial screening and then they asked to go inside and sit as per the order of the line formed. (Another very common tip : Do not take any medical CDs and electronics as they are not allowed inside the consulate.) Now we were asked to enter the security check area which is just as similar to an airport security check counters and then you sit walk inside a very big waiting area and then finally enter the main waiting area where the interview takes place. The Indian guys working there will ask you to take out the following documents like Original passport, PCC(Original+Copy), Birth certificate(Original+copy), Embassy letter, Medical report(sealed), and 2 photographs and then they help them put all those documents in order and give you a token number. One strange thing about the consulate general(Mumbai) is that they organised applicants as per the Punjabi's, South Indian's and rest were general category so as I am a punjabi applicant they asked me to stand in a different line and gave me a token number which started with P (P603). Then they asked us to sit for a while until the one more Indian guys calls to check the documents on the window. I waited for 20 mins as the other Indian guy called me to window number 2 and took all the documents which were organised by the Indian people earlier and asked for 2 photographs and started asking basic questions like who is calling you and have you been to US before and on what Visa, have you been to some other country and then asked for i134 but returned the pay stubs, bank letter and employment letter and then he handed over the pamphlet about the rights in the US and asked me to read it while I wait for the main interview with the CO.

I waited for like 20 mins more being all anxious and my mind filled with lot of thoughts about the interview but tried to stay calm and relaxed which helped me during the interview and then finally listened an American accent voice calling my token number P603 to counter 11. There was an American guy probably in his 30s and greeted me and asked me to put my finger on the scanner placed on the right side and then asked me to take an oath. Finally he started with the following questions:
1. How did you guys meet?
2. Who approached first?
3.How many times have you guys met in person?
4. How do you guys talk and how often do you guys talk to each other?
5. What are your plans to do in the US?
6. What does she do for work?
7. Where are you gonna live with her once you move there?

That's it and then he started typing for like less than 2 minutes and smiled when he looked something on his computer and said I'll keep your passport and said you are Approved...!!! He didn't ask for a single piece of document and nothing at all. Once they see you are confident about yours answers they do not grill you and try to be very casual with you.

My advise to all those who are going to appear for their k1 visa interview is to :
Stay calm
Always keep smile on your face
Do not try to cook stories about your relationship and just be honest
If your relationship is legit then you are on a right path.

Good Luck to all the visa applicants...!!!

Did you call the nvc and got your case number and then booked the appointment? What about packet 3 and 4?
blank avatar GSKhanuja on 2019-10-11 said:
Yes called the NVC to get the case number. You will get your packet 3 or 4 when embassy receives your petition from NVC
blank avatar Chipper1952 on 2019-10-15 said:
Hey congrats on interview date set. After being behind on account of RFE, we just heard news that NVC received our info for processing on the 11th of October. We have everything filled out and ready to go but still waiting for case# which they said could take 3-6 weeks more...ugh! I was worried everything hitting around the holidays, but at this pace, probably after the New year...hope not...but airports can be a challenge around the holidays and I am going over to Mumbai to be with my partner for support...besides...I miss him so much! Even though we talk every day it's not the same...I'm sure you and everyone else knows what I mean. Glad you are moving forward...best, Chip

Thank u so much... I hope you get the case number soon but as per y personal experience it should take close to 5 weeks for you to get the case( sometimes earlier) and should take 4 weeks for the NVC to get your approved petition from USCIS. All the very best and keep us posted if u hear anything from NVC.
blank avatar BKS on 2019-11-08 said:
@GSkhanuja have you received any packet from US Consulate Mumbai? My case also left NVC on 15th October...i got my medical done and interview is on 5th December...but haven't received anything from the Consulate yet
blank avatar GSKhanuja on 2019-11-08 said:
@BKS No I didn’t receive anything from the embassy but after following up with them several times they sent an email with the instructions and also told me that they have sent a hard copy of the file on Oct 24th but I didn’t receive anything yet. The instructions they sent via email are quite generic and does not have anything specific information related to our case. You can download a packet 4 from US embassy(mumbai) website which are same for all k1 visa applicants in India. Also is your appointment for 5th or 6th Dec? Mine is on the 29th Nov.
blank avatar BKS on 2019-11-08 said:
@GSKhanuja my interview is on 5th December...but i have neither received any hard copy or soft copy of the file from the Embassy.....So if I download the packet 4 from US embassy website, will that suffice for the interview? Aren't they supposed to send an interview letter or something?
blank avatar GSKhanuja on 2019-11-08 said:
@BKS They do send out an invite letter but that is something which is not required to take for the interview. You can download the packet 4 from the website and start preparing for your medical test and civil documents. Which part are u from in India?
blank avatar BKS on 2019-11-09 said:
@GSKhanuja I am from Kolkata and you are from? Would you mind sharing the link/path from where I can download the packet 4? I am done with my medical and civil documents are also in place...
blank avatar GSKhanuja on 2019-11-09 said:
@BKS I am from Delhi. Here is the link https://in.usembassy.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/71/2017/02/ND-K1-Packet-4.pdf Did u also get your vaccinations done while getting the medical test?
blank avatar BKS on 2019-11-10 said:
@GSKhanuja No, I didn't get any vaccine during the medical test... Doctor said I would have to take the vaccines during the medical test in US after filing for Adjustment of Status....So I skipped it...wat about u?
blank avatar GSKhanuja on 2019-11-10 said:
@BKS I got all the vaccines here only
blank avatar BKS on 2019-11-11 said:
@GSkhanuja how many u had to take?? and what's your tentative travel date? how long does it take to get the visa post interview? any idea?
blank avatar GSKhanuja on 2019-11-11 said:
@BKS I had to take 4 vaccines... no travel dates decided yet as I’ll wait for the visa first and then plan accordingly
blank avatar NBSUFFERN on 2019-11-13 said:
@GSKhanuja - Wish you good luck for your interview. I received the confirmation from NVC yesterday that they have sent the details to Mumbai Consulate and they would get in touch with me. I am from Delhi and would like to know, as to what all civil document would I need? Is there a standard document for PCC - if yes, you could share the copy (knowing its difficult to get anything from department here). Rest I'll go ahead and get the medical process started. Have you received any letter/ confirmation from Consulate for your interview? Thanks
blank avatar GSKhanuja on 2019-11-13 said:
@Bhupi you can get your PCC from any of the passport seva kendra near you and just apply for PCC under the category immigration other than citizenship. Also get your medical and other civil documents ready now. Did you book an appointment at the embassy? Can you share your email id?
blank avatar CMM on 2019-11-16 said:
Congrats on the interview date. I have a doubt regarding the medical exam. Did you get all the 4 vaccines done on the same day? Also, the doctor would suggest what vaccines would be appropriate based on your age right? The general vaccine list has a lot more than 4 though. Would you be required to take more vaccines when filing for aos?
blank avatar GSKhanuja on 2019-11-17 said:
@CMM I had all the vaccines done on the same day and the doctors suggest you to get the vaccines as per the medical history so for my case it was only 4 required. It is not required to take any more vaccines when you apply for AOS if you have the record of the vaccines taken while applying for a K1 visa.

@GSKhanuja- While filling out DS-160, did you put any National Identification No (like Aadhar Card No. or PAN) or left it blank?

Congratulations on your approval! Did you get your Embassy letter in time for your interview? Is this the same as Packet 4?
blank avatar GSKhanuja on 2019-12-11 said:
@SJ yes they sent me embassy letter but not on time as they send it through regular Indian post and that takes time. I would suggest you drop an email to them and they can send embassy letter on email as well.

Thanks for you best wishes. What you typed in your comments about the interview I couldn't have said better and ours went very much the same. I am so happy and grateful this part of the process is over...it's like the culmination of the past 8 months crescendos into this one date, then hour, then interview and what a relief when all the hard work has paid off and you get the approval slip! After spending the week on Holiday in Mumbai with a small bit of celebration and relaxation will be meeting in Palm Springs sometime mid January for wedding and beginning our life legally bonded together with a court wedding first (for paperwork within 90 days) and a celebration to follow. I wish you and all our fellow couples the very best together for a blessed and prosperous life.
