My appointment was at 9:50 and I got to the consulate at 9:30 (deutsche Pünktlichkeit). There are 2 lines outside the consulate. One for citizens and one for visa applicants. I took the one for visa applicants of course and once I got called to the window, I showed the lady my DS-160 and my passport and was sent to security. The security check felt like an airport (taking jackets and watches off, emptying your pant pockets and so on). If you need to bring your phone to get to the consulate, you will get a locker there where you can leave it for the time of your stay at the consulate.
Once inside the final building, you first go to “check in†where they tell you where to go. For me, that was window 22, where I went through my paperwork with a case worker. He checked my address and that I paid all the fees. You also get a number and are told to wait in the waiting area until your number is called. Once your number is called you go to a second window. I went through my online application DS-160 with the case worker and got sent to wait for my actual interview with the immigration officer. Now the waiting begins. On average, one case took about 20 minutes. I waited for about an hour - so bring a book if you want to occupy your time (I was too nervous to read though).
Then it was my time to shine. My number got called for the interview part.
At first you have to take an oath and swear that you’re telling the truth. Then it’s fingerprint time (not that they don’t already have your fingerprints from traveling to the states but oh well). Following are the questions I got asked:
- if I was aware of my fiancé’s criminal past (DUIs) - yes he actually started the conversation with that
- how we met
- when we started dating
- when we got engaged
- when we last saw each other
- where my fiancé is right now
- if we have been previously married
- if we had any children
- if we had any plans for our wedding yet
After that he told me “he had great news†and that he was going to approve me today and that it will take 7-10 days to get my passport back. We will see about that I guess.
All in all a pleasant experience, the immigration officer was very very neutral though and not “all smiles†like some other posts here suggest. But I guess that depends on you immigration officer. And if you hate waiting, you’re going to hate it a lot at the consulate - it made me more anxious than I needed to feel. |
