Consulate Review: Bogota, Colombia
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : February 22, 2018
Embassy Review : Our appointment was at 8am and as others have reported, everyone waiting for interviews is gathered across the street from a park where they announce appointment times over a loud speaker. When each appointment time is called, a rush of people with that appointment line up to queue to enter the embassy grounds.

Once inside, we lined up for our first documents check - the woman who reviewed our documents told me we were missing MY (petitioner's) birth certificate - and that my passport wouldn’t suffice. She asked me 2 or 3 times if I was certain I didn’t bring it and then gave us our green stickers (that said “K”) and gave me a look like ‘yikes, that was a big mistake.’ Turned out to be a non-issue - I was never asked for it again.

We queued up in front of a set of windows where a dude went through our documents again, opened our sealed medical envelope and clipped a few things together:

Clip #1: passport & passport photos, birth cert, DS-160, Antecedentes Penales & medical docs
Clip #2: I-134, letter of employment & taxes
He also asked for our email addresses and phone numbers.

After that, we walked over to a guy in a red jacket who highlighted my fiance’s name on a list of appointments and gave us an appointment number. We walked over to the waiting area and watched people get called up for their interview. We chatted with a bunch of folks in the waiting area and it helped pass the time. We didn’t see a single person walk away from the interview windows unhappy.

Our number was called and we got in a smaller line in front of the interview windows and finally we ended up with a kind-looking black gentleman (maybe in his early 30s? My fiance wasn’t sure if he was American or not). The interview was quick - maybe less than 10 minutes. First he asked my fiance who was petitioning for him; he pointed to me and said “mi novia.” I couldn’t see him very well due to the reflection on the window but every once I could see him looking at me while Daniel answered his questions. We got these questions:

What is her name?
Where was she born?
What does she do for work?
How many times have you met?
How did you meet?
How did you get engaged?

He looked through our pictures and emails and then got up and walked away for a bit - when he came back he had a yellow slip in his hand which he gave to my fiance and explained that he was approved and the visa would be ready in less than a week.

That was it! I was confused at first because I was expecting a pink slip and also expecting to be asked a few questions as well but it was over in a flash. It was almost too fast/easy that it felt too good to be true - it took a few minutes for it to sink in that we were done, we had passed and could relax. When we passed the waiting area, some of the folks we had been chatting with hugged us and congratulated us and that’s when we finally let out a huge sigh of relief, gave each other a huge hug and kiss and then high fived.

Overall, it was a very seamless experience.
Rating : Very Good

Hey. Are yoi from NY as well? My fiance is Cuban. I almost regret not marrying there and filing cr1 as it is moving faster these days. Marrying in Cuba was very expensive. Any updates on EAD?

Hi Leslie, Sorry just seeing this now - yes, we're in NY. We just received EAD approval today. Was a much longer wait than expected. Where in Cuba is your fiance from?

Havana. We are still waiting on noa2. Hopefully things move fast. Im in a fb group called Cuba Ever After with other US and some Canadian citizens who are married engaged to Cubans if you're interested. There are about 12 of us in NY. Hopefully we can have a lil Cuban community here. Lol Thanks for your reply.

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
