We arrived at the JFK Federal Building a half hour before our appointment time. We were directed to a window to hand in the Appointment Notice, and the gentleman at the window said someone would be with us fairly soon. At exactly our appointment time (11:45 AM), the same gentleman as before ("Officer Dana") called out my name (the petitioner), and took both us to his office, together. When I asked if my husband should come with me (because I had read that often they interview the couple separately) he just joked, "If he's the husband, then yes!"
We were both put under oath, and my fingerprints and photo were taken. Officer Dana asked me how I met my husband, and then just asked us if we were happy and "how it's going." I told him I was happy, and that we loved our little apartment in the North End, our jobs, our friends, and each other. Then we spoke a bit about rent (he was moving soon and wanted to compare experiences) and he remarked that I spoke English perfectly. He confirmed a few details from our application (date of birth, parents' names, address, sex, etc.), but the whole conversation was relaxed and easy-going. Very early on in the meeting, he indicated that he would be approving us on the spot.
The only question he asked my husband was if he was happy, and what my relationship with his family (particularly his mother) was like. Officer Dana didn't ask any questions that seemed like he was "testing" us, or was trying to see if we would have different answers. It was really more of a conversation about our plans and what we liked about living in the city. My husband and I know each other for 5 years, have been a couple for over 4 years, live together, attended college together, and have a truly wonderful relationship so I wasn't nervous about answering the questions, just a little surprised because of what I had read in other reviews and was therefore expecting.
I, the petitioner, was asked a series of yes/no questions, and then was told that he was going to approve us right on the spot. We continued just chatting about our lives (and rent in Boston) while he updated our application and he asked us how we wanted my name to appear on the green card. He asked us if we had any further supporting documents. We gave him our joint tax return for 2016, our updated apartment lease, and a statement from our joint bank account, all of which he added to our file. He gave me some instructions about what not to do while living in the U.S. as a legal permanent resident, and gave us the exact date we could apply for the removal of conditions and even U.S. citizenship!
Some thing to note is that we had already included a medical examination in our application, but he did make sure that was in there. If they don't have your completed form I-693, make sure this is done before the interview!
All in all, it was a very pleasant experience. |
