Consulate Review: Ankara, Turkey
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : July 11, 2017
Embassy Review : I prepared the folder thoroughly, had 23 photos of us from when my wife-to-be visited me three times and simply from video calls we had. Entering the consulate, I waited only 10 minutes until my number popped up and I spoke to the first officer. One of the documents they wanted to have along with the I-134 form was missing (I think the officer said something like "File 1400") but she said that our documents looked all very good and that the consulate might decide to accept it the way it is. The first officer talked to me in Turkish.

She collected following documents and sent me back to sit and wait again:

- All documents that are listed in the mail
- All photos
- A copy of the birth certificate of our child (I offered that one)

She didn't look at or ask for our flight tickets and similar documents or our conversations at all. I had my former passport with me but I forgot to offer it and she didn't ask for it since I haven't been to the US before.

I had to wait for 2 hours and almost fell asleep once, then my number popped up and I went to the second officer who was obviously American and greeted me in English with a nice smile on her face. From that moment I was very hopeful. I had to swear, then she proceeded to the questions:

- Did you live in another country before and for how long? (Because I had a German birth certificate)
- Where in the USA does your fiancee live?
- What does she do for a living?
- How did you meet? (She was very interested in this one since we met on social media. She found it sweet and smiled.)
- When did you meet?
- When and how did you meet in person for the first time?
- Does your son live with her in America?
- Did you see your son in person? (I said no and she said "I wish you come together very soon" in a nice way)

Then she typed a bit on the computer in front of her for a while. When she was done, she gave me back the photos and my original birth certificate along with 2 papers about my rights in the USA and a paper with instructions on how to pick up my passport. She said: "Good luck and I hope you have a great time together," so I asked her, "does this mean it is approved?" She confirmed it and I became very happy and emotional and thanked like 5 times. She was happy with me and made more wishes, then I left. Overall it was pretty straightforward and the officer and the result were amazing.

Here are my suggestions:
1. Have all documents, they formally ask for.
2. Have enough good photos of your relationship. If you have a child together already, include information and photos of your child.
3. Be very confident, don't be afraid and overly anxious.
4. Have a smile on your face and appear with your friendliest and happiest side.

I wish all serious applicants good luck and congratulations!

EDIT: I received my visa only 3 days after the interview.

Embassy Review : It went very smooth. I told my wife-to-be that I would spend at least 30 minutes with the immigration officer, but the officer was very nice and said that he only cares about if I'm healthy or not. I was friendly and frank, so I told him jokingly that I was completely healthy, except that my ears were clogged from the flight and that I apologize in advance if he has to repeat anything. He said it's not a problem and smiled. He checked everything in under 5 minutes, made his stamps and said: "Welcome to America!"

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
