June 18, 2019 NYC, Federal Plaza, 7th Floor Javit's Bldg.
I began writing this about 30 minutes after arriving home from interview.
We had an 11:25 appointment time. The check-in line (after metal detectors downstairs) was 45 minutes long itself. Glad we showed up an hour early.
Interview began about 3pm. USCIS Rep seemed a bit negative from the outset though.
10 minutes into interview the Rep noted that she did not realize we were K1 and it seemed to relax a bit. Seems she thought we were an Overstay adjustment or some such. We began this journey 4-5 years ago.
Tone of interview never really improved. Nothing specific that was really negative but it was far from encouraging. Not having Health Insurance for Beneficiary became the Rep's next focus. I thought it odd given Trump's recent decimation of Obamacare and the nationwide confusion that ensued but I kept my mouth shut.
Then the date of my divorce became an issue (I'm 61). My divorce was mid-90's but the original records destroyed when County Record room flooded wiping out thousands of records a decade ago. I had a new judgment signed by another judge in 2017 (4-5 years of K1 process). As I tried to explain, it was evident that short answers best and avoid explanations. If my wife & I were 30 years old, our life and file would be very simple. At 60 & 50, we each had the complications that happen to any international couple over several decades.
I hoped for something encouraging as we left but Rep only gave us the standard 'sometime during the next 120 days' advice. After 4-5 years of USCIS we hoped for a pleasant end-note to this journey. Seems that's not meant to be.
++++Anyway, just stopped writing to check USCIS' Case Status and we were Approved New Card being issued should receive in a few days! Seems they posted the result immediately. Hooray!! We're finally we're finished with this dreadful business. |

We got a 221g with time to submit 3 missing documents.
We are older and had a few more decades to account for so our visa journey was longer than most couples.
Her experience was definitely positive as she felt encouraged to continue. The entire process is tough. Full of peaks and valleys emotion-wise. We have been involved for 3-4 years so our proof of relationship was solid.
Interview certainly could have gone far worse so we feel good about it.
Our main problem is PRC's reliance on Hukow/Family Register to control people's movement. It seems this is a common issue for citizens of PRC not residing in China and is not really an insurmountable problem if people really want it and your case is strong in other areas.
I thank everyone who helped us along the way here on VJ and urge everyone to vote this November. |

Timeline Comments: 8Hello there.. I hope you dont mind me asking that.. What is the rfe you received?
And
You mentioned you have multiple drug related cases.. Did you check part 3... 2c? 3 or more drug and alcohol convictions?
Did you submit waiver on this case? Since it's in part 3 2a-c specified crime.. Sick worried about this.. Thank you in advance
We are still waiting for word from USCIS after submitting our 2nd RFE reply in April. After a 391 day wait for the K1 Visa, AOS looks to be another marathon wait.
Finally AOS Interview scheduled. Almost finished and it feels good.
Still waiting for notice about our Petition to Remove Conditions. It’s been almost 2 years since GC.
How long must we keep waiting?
My wife would like to visit her family but the thought of filing a Petition (more time than the trip itself) for permission to leave for a 2 week trip is enough to stop us from trying.
You don't have to wait for the notice, you should submit as early as 90 days before 2 yrs anniversary of greencard
US Citizenship granted March 6, 2023
Citizenship accelerated the Removal of Conditions. Both granted same day
*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the
USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
