**Never had an AOS interview, went from submission, to "we used your old fingerprints", to approved

3 months after my 18 month extension expired, i received a "case status updated" email at 6am, check my "case status" online and saw "approved". Such a relief, was stuck in such a weird limbo where i couldn't leave the states to visit family because had no "proof of status" for reentry or switch jobs because my card was "expired"

Embassy Review : Hello!

I for one, relied heavily on reviews like this in order to prepare myself for my interview so I am giving back by sharing my experiences and being as detailed as possible in doing so. Hope you hind thins helps!

1) If you choose to fly into and out of Montreal in the same day and do not have a hotel room - AS I DID - do not be freaking out about where to store your belongings while at the interview (I will explain that later). The Eaton Center that is two blocks away has storage lockers for $1/day and are very convenient.

My experience:

I had my interview on March 22, 2017. I flew into Montreal from Toronto that morning, landing at 8am. I wanted to give myself lots of time in case of a delayed flight, bad weather, or just getting lost in Montreal. Thankfully, none of those things happened and i had ample amounts of time to do a little exploring in Montreal. If you are arriving in the airport, proceed to the ground transportation level to find the public transit buses. I believe it was door 46 led be down a large hallway to essentially the rotating doors to the curbside. There are a few lard self-help kiosks for "BUS 747" (this is the airport-downtown shuttle you want) pay for and print your bus pass ($10 for unlimited rides within 24 hours). There will be a line of people waiting either inside the doors or outside on the curb for bus 747. Enter the bus and scan your card to ride. The ride from the airport to the first stop is about 30 minutes then the bus will stop every couple blocks. Your best bet is to exit at SAINT-LAURENT stop - this is closest to the consulate.

I arrived downtown around 10am so i had plenty of time before my interview so i stopped by the consulate and asked the security guard about what i could and could not bring to the interview. He said ONLY my binder/folder, coat and wallet. you CAN bring your cell phone, but they take it from you at security and give it back when you leave. NO BAGS!!! He also said to comeback no earlier than 10 minutes before my interview time. They are serious about that. They turn you away if you show up 11 minutes before your time.

I killed some time at the Eaton Center then returned to the consulate 15 minutes before my interview time with only my coat, wallet, cellphone and binder. I was asked to wait outside the door for them to get ready to let us in. By the time they let us in, i was first in line ahead of about 20 other people. turns out they give the same interview time to a bunch of people and the process you all as a group. I walked in the first room (the lobby) and checked in with a friendly lady who asked for my passport and appointment confirmation letter. She then gave me a paper with a number on the top and instructions on it. They i was asked to step through the next door into security. This is similar to airport security with the xray machine and you having to place everything in bins to the xrayed. Once through, i was asked to turn off and check in my cell phone. THIS IS A VERY SMALL SPACE AND YOU WILL BE IN THE WAY OF EVERYONE SO BE PREPARED AHEAD OF TIME. I collected my things, and went through another door, down some stairs, and into a waiting room. There was no one else there as i was the first in so you take the elevator to floor 19. (there are only two buttons in the elevator so don't worry about forgetting which floor to go to) when you exit the elevator, turn left and there is a bunch of chairs to sit and wait. You will be called by the number on the paper you received at the front door so be listening for that number.

While sitting int he waiting chairs, look over the instructions on that paper and try your best to organize the documents in the way they request. If you get called up to the first window before you are ready and organized (as i was) do not worry! They are extremely patient and kind and only ask for one document at a time anyways so you have time to find stuff in your binder. The lady asked me for basically everyhting that was listed on the checklist in packet #3. Make sure you have these documents. once they are satisfied with the documents you have given, you will receive the contents of the UNOPENED medical exam results you just handed in. This is to be kept for your personal records. They will take your fingerprints and then send you back to sit in the waiting area you just came from.

Next, you wait for your actual interview. Pay attention again to the numbers they are calling over the speakers. The order will get pretty random (2 to window 7, 8 to winder 13, 1 to window 5, etc.) so do not get worried if they seem to skip your number. I got called up window 7 after about ten minutes of waiting. you walk down a hall to a small room with a glass window in one wall similar to a ticket or bank window. this was the easiest part of the whole experience!!! The agent was not intimidating, he was dressed in everyday business clothes and was super friendly. He already has a folder with everything you have sent to them during the past months of this process and he quickly scans through it. he said to me: "everything looks great, i just have to ask you a few questions". he asked me maybe 7 questions about how my fiancee and I met, how we communicate, what our wedding plans are, what she does for a living, what day we got engaged, etc. super basic stuff that you will know off the top of your head. He then said "okay so you've been approved" and then went through formalities about what happened next with your visa and passport, etc. (they keep your passport and mail it to the post office that you indicated when you booked your appointment along with the visa withing 2 week) I took the opportunity to ask the agent a few questions about what happened when i do eventually cross into the US for the wedding and he was super helpful.

You then return to the the elevator, back down stairs, into security to get your phone back, and out the doors into the beautiful Montreal streets!

SUMMARY:

Do not freak out about this interview. IF you have all the documents on the checklist in packet #3 and are genuinely in love with your fiancee and know them well, this is a breeze. I was in and out within 30 minutes. This is not a grilling of your personal life and an intimidating experience.

Hope that helps!

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
