Consulate Review: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Embassy Review : My experience was pretty good at RDJ Consulate. My interview was scheduled 10:20AM, but we were there at 9:00AM. There was a small line to access the facility, but people on the line were there for mainly for Tourist/Business visas, and we used another entrance ahead this line, since our request was for a K3 Visa. We crossed the X-Ray area (bags and ANY electronic devices are not allowed) and we were oriented to go upstairs at the 2nd floor. Once there Alex asked us to sit down and wait. 15 minutes later, he called us and gave a checklist form and oriented to put the documents in that order. 15 minutes later he checked if all the documents were there and in order. Everything was ok, and he asked us to wait. After 20 minutes, a woman called us to pre-check the documents. She returned the copies of the documents, opened the Medical Exams and gave to me my vaccination certificate, because it is valid in USA and I will need it. She also collected my fingerprints and asked me to wait for the CO call in the same auditorium that I was before. We waited around 2 hours to have our interview, because the CO was interviewing other visa requesters. We were called and the interview didn’t take more than 5 minutes. He just asked:
- Where do I live?
- Where does my husband lives?
- If I will move to USA
- When we got married
- Where we got married

I answered all the questions promptly, but I confess I wrongly said my Marriage date, what I corrected immediately, and he made a joke saying that all Brazilians don’t remember dates… we all laughed and he said the magic words “I will proceed with your visa”. He wished us good luck in USA and I left the room. After this, I just went to the post office near the Consulate, I paid the delivery, and went back to Consulate to deliver the post office document.

Some tips:
- Take all the original documents that you sent the copies to NVC with you and the new ones requested on the letter that you received scheduling your interview;
- Take copies of all documents, even the one that you sent to NVC. Just in case…
- At the document check moment (not the one that Alex did), they probably will return a lot of documents copies to you. Keep them and do not complain that you have now more than 1 copy of some documents… it is better you have to copies instead of have none and have your interview rescheduled due this.
- Take the requested photos, otherwise they will not collect your fingerprints and you have to reschedule your interview;
- Follow all the instructions given and wait for Alex orientation. I saw some people talking a lot and not putting the papers in order.
- Eat something before go to the consulate. I was prepared to stay all the morning there. I arrived at 9:00AM and I just left at 1:00PM.
- Consulate is very close Cinelandia Subway Station. Around 200m.

Embassy Review : Before describe my experience, it is important say that Rio de Janeiro Consulate "converted" my K3 Visa process to a CR1 visa. I confess that I had to "triple check" this on internet forums, etc because I was not believing!

I was with my spouse, so we used the US Citizens line, and the lady that was organizing the line said we had use the kiosks to proceed. The computer was not able to read my Visa, so we went to another small line to have the documents checked by an immigration officer. Additionally, I was with my backpack full of copies of the documents submitted during the whole process, just in case they ask it again... pure paranoia... Once there, the immigration officer got my envelope and opened it, so I was able to see the envelope content, that was just the same documents that I saw at the embassy when I was there for the interview. He checked everything and asked where and when we met each other and what I was doing on that occasion in USA, and I was so nervous that I didn't understand what he said, but my spouse helped me and gave to him the information requested. The official also asked when and where we got married. After these questions, he collected my fingerprints. He said that my green card was valid for 18 months and in a few weeks I will get my provisory card. No additional documents were requested. I should confess that I was so relieved that I felt as if a truck were removed from my shoulders.

I would like to add two more information: 1) One week later I went to Social Security Administration office to start my SSN request, and the clerk said I must wait at least 3 weeks to start the process, because this is the average time for them to receive the information from Immigration Department. I was a little upset, but it these are the rules, what could I do? One week later (2 weeks after my entrance) I got magically a letter from Social Security Administration with my Social Security Card, what made me very happy, and made me think that they probably have some interface between they, and the SSN is automatically requested. My SSN came without any restriction. 2) My Green Card arrived around one month after my entrance.
