Consulate Review: Sydney, Australia
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : January 10, 2007
Embassy Review : My daughter and I had to fly to Sydney from Perth so we stayed at the Travelodge on Phillips St. Closest hotel I could see (as recommended in another member's review!). Got to the MLC building at 7:30am and went to the 10th floor. Progressed quickly through to the 59th floor. Received Immigrant visa number 002. I was very apprehensive but all the staff were very friendly. I was a little bit concerned when they asked me about my own funds. I had shown I have a house in Australia which I am getting ready to sell, but they wanted to see a sale contract. I reminded them that they advise us against selling our house until the visa is approved. It was a nervous wait for the interview as the filing clerk said the consular officer would have to make a decision on whether to accept my evidence. Fortunately he did.
I was surprise how quickly it all happened. I anticipated spending the whole morning there and we brought travel Scrabble along to kill time. I was so nervous I was shaking and kept dropping the letters all over the floor!! I was called again just before 9am for the interview. My daughter was flown across the country to be asked 'What's your name?' and 'Is this your mum?'. Then she was asked to sit down again. I got more nervous then thinking that the questions were going to get personal, but it was just short and sweet - when did we meet, what is my fiance's name, DOB, has he got kids, how old, ever married, etc.

Visas approved by 9am!!!

During the time I was there I became the 'expert'. I had 3 different sets of people going for family-based visas asking me questions. How long will it take? Ooh did I need photos? What fee, I didn't know we had to pay a fee?! Was I suppose to take a ticket? The tips received on this website, such as where to stay, get there early, be the last one in the elevator all proved to be so valuable. Thanks everyone for your help!!!

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
