I arrived at the embassy at 11am. My appointment wasn't until 12pm, but I wanted to get there early just in case!
When I arrived, it was very quiet. There's a little desk at the entrance where the member of staff checks off your name from a list - you'll need your passport and the letter you received from the embassy that's got a copy of the I129f petition at this point. Once my name was checked off, the lady sent me to the security area. I had to take off a bracelet I had on, and put my bag, documents, phone, passport into a plastic tray. It's just like at an airport. I then went through the metal detector, and collected my bag and my documents, and then made my way to the main embassy building.
At the front desk, a very pleasant young guy checked my name off of another list, gave me a number and directed me through to the main waiting area. It seemed pretty quiet - I reckon there were maybe about twenty or so other people waiting as well. I hate waiting, and at this point I felt like my anxiety and nerves were going into overdrive! I was waiting probably only around twenty minutes before my number was called.
At the booth, I spoke with a British staff member who asked for my passport, my birth certificate, police certificate and the affidavit of support. He also asked for any supporting documents to go with the affidavit of support, so I handed over Jay's pay stubs, tax transcripts for the last three years, w2's and a letter from his employer. They also scanned my fingerprints at this time too. After he had all the information from me that he needed, he instructed me to take a seat again and wait to be called for the actual interview part. This all took maybe five to ten minutes.
I was probably sitting for only fifteen minutes, before my number was called again and this time I spoke to a very pleasant male CO. He asked me when Jay and I first got to know each other, and then when we first met in person. He then went on to ask how many times we'd visited each other, so I told him when and for how long we'd visited. He asked if I'd met any of Jay's family or friends, what it was that Jay did for a living and how long he'd been doing it for. After that last question, he said 'okay, so I'm going to go ahead and approve that for you.' I just couldn't stop smiling and said 'I can't believe that's it!' He laughed and said, 'yep, that's it - you better go call him now.' I thanked him again and fought the urge to jump up and down with the biggest smile on my face.
That's it! The scary interview was done!
All in all, I spoke to the CO for less than five minutes and it was approved. I couldn't believe how straightforward it was, especially after worrying so much! The CO gave me back my birth certificate and the photos we submitted with our petition, which I wasn't expecting and thought was really cool. I'm glad I went early as well, because I was out of the embassy by 12pm which was the time my appointment was scheduled for. |
