My appointment was scheduled for today, November 30th at 8:15. My fiance and I stayed at an airbnb about ten minutes away from the consulate and left the apartment shortly after 7:00. When we got to the consulate at about 7:20 there were a few people ahead of us. I was worried about being too early for my appointment, but at 7:30 the security guard came out and put up signs and rope to form a queue and then instructed everyone to take out passports and ds-160 confirmation pages. They then let people into the building about 2 at a time. When we got in they looked at my ds-160, put a sticker on the back of my passport and gave me a laminated sheet with the number 4 on it that listed the order you should put your documents in and another sheet for their purposes where they mark the time you enter the building. They also asked for my fiance's ID before he could enter. After that we were told to queue for the metal detector. Again they took people in 2 at a time and we gave our phones to the security who gave us a ticket to retrieve them on the way out. In all the reviews I had read before, I imagined this all occurring in a larger room, but actually the first lobby is quite cramped and there are only 2 metal detectors in the next room.
When we were all clear they sent us down the stairs to a waiting room. It reminded me of a community centre or church basement and all the chairs were pressed against the wall. There was a random photo booth in the corner which I guess is handy if you forgot to bring your pictures with you. Once the seats had filled up a security guard emerged and had us form a line to get on the elevator. Ya if you sit closer you'll get on quicker, but it really doesn't matter since you already got your number when you entered the building. The guard ushered us all in like cattle and we ascended silently to the 19th floor.
The upstairs has a dingy typical office feel to it. There were 3 seating areas with k1 visas sitting in the middle seats. There is a snack machine, drink machine etc. And a TV playing footage of American parks and cities and happy American folks. Which was funny cause they were trying to convince a room of people who were already getting visas to come to America. I chuckled at it.
About 10 or 15 minutes of waiting and they called me up to window #1. The woman there would ask for a document and then spend about 5 minutes stapling things and shuffling my papers around. Remember to bring the proof of your visa payment with you. This wasn't listed on my packet 4 letter, but I had seen users mention it in various threads so I brought it. It's funny because it IS listed on the laminated sheet they give you. For each document she asked for she also made notes on a little checklist in my file. One thing that worried me was when she asked for my financial evidence. My fiance's mother is co-sponsoring,so I handed over all the tax transcripts for her etc. And then she asked for a copy of her passport or drivers licence...which I didn't have. Up until that point my little checklist had all blue pen in it, but at that point she brought out the red pen and wrote something on my file. She took my prints and then handed me a flyer on domestic abuse and sent me back to sit.
After maybe 5 minutes I was called up to window 7. Window 7 through 12 still have glass, but they are like private little cubbies. The man interviewing me was a younger dude and he was very enthusiastic and easy going. He first had me take an oath swearing that all my documentation was true and correct. Then he asked questions about my fiance. How did we meet? Who visited who first? What does he do? He barely even looked at my financials. But I saw him write over the red ink "ok" which made me feel better. Then he handed me a slip that said "welcome to America" and I was free to leave. When we had gathered our phones and exited the building it was 8:50.
I think the takeaways from my review should be a) to go early since appointment time doesn't seem to matter too much (but certainly dont be late!) I was in and out so fast b) make sure to remember your proof of payment and c) if you have a cosponsor, bring some proof that they are a US citizen, like a copy of their passport or drivers licence.
The interview is a breeze as long as you have all your paperwork! |

This review is for the Detroit Windsor tunnel. I'm giving a longer review because I've seen that most people seem to enter at the Ambassador Bridge and there weren't many reviews of the tunnel when I was looking for them.
We left my house in Windsor around 1pm with my fiance and parents. My fiance and I were catching a flight at 8pm. I managed to fit most of my belongings in 4 suitcases that we checked and then used UPS to ship a few boxes. We left early to make sure we could get them mailed on the US side (much cheaper and less hassle).
When we got to the border, there were barely any cars. We pulled up to the window and the man scolded my dad for pulling forward too soon. He was a stereotypical miserable border agent. My dad gave over all the passports and from the backseat I informed him I was entering on my K-1 visa. The man then called on his radio for someone to take us to secondary and put a sticker on our windshield. When no one came he escorted us there himself.
I had never been pulled into secondary before so I didn't really know what the procedure was. A border agent came over and told us to turn off the car, put the keys on the dash and step out. We were to leave all our electronics in the car, but to take our money with us. He was also miserable. We were instructed to cross to the other side of the parking lot and enter the building there.
You walk down a long hallway and the man checks you in. There were 2 other groups of people in there before us. We sat down and waited until we were called. The agents in secondary were much nicer and humoured my dad as he asked if they'd ever been on an episode of Border Security.
We were called up after about 5 or 10 minutes and handed over our passports to the man at the desk. At this point I handed over my sealed envelope as well and he opened it. He didn't ask for it, but I mentioned that I had a manifest and gave it to him. He looked it over and laughed when he saw that I had listed my SNES and N64. He said that was probably the last thing he expected to see on a manifest. There was a little chatting, he explained what the I-94 was etc etc. and then had us sit down so he could finish up some paperwork.
After about 5 minutes or so of waiting he called us up again and this time I gave my fingerprints and he also took a picture of me. He asked a few questions, about how we met, what website it was and what thread. It didn't seem like he was grilling us, more that he was curious how we met since we both look very young. He called us adorable once or twice which was funny. I couldn't have asked for a nicer, more competent person to have helped us, honestly. At the end he handed back my passport with a stamp and my I-94 stapled inside of it then sent us on our way.
I expected that when we got back in the car that some of my sealed boxes for UPS might have been opened but everything was as it was. I think they may have sifted through my purse and they definitely looked under the hood and in the glove compartment but that's about it.
We were in and out of there in about 20 minutes or so and it was incredibly easy. The border patrol agents in the booths always seem to be grumpy but the agents inside were much friendlier and nice. I obviously can't comment on how the ambassador bridge is compared to the tunnel for activating a visa, but I had a good experience at the tunnel so don't let the lack of reviews scare you away! |

My interview was yesterday at 7:15am. We live in Seattle so we left our apartment an hour early and pulled into the parking lot around 7. We went through security and then waited in line to be checked in. There were maybe 5 groups of people ahead of us. The woman checked my ID and sent us up to the second floor. We sat on the right side where a bunch of other couples were seated (I had read the left side is for naturalization) and were called in around 20 minutes later. The IO had us sit and then requested drivers licences and passports from us. He took my picture and the fingerprints for both of my index fingers. Then he had us stand and take the oath. He began by directing questions at my husband:
Who is this? What is her full name?
When is her birthday?
Have you met her parents? What are their names? Where do they live?
My husband was very nervous and said my wrong birthday before quickly correcting himself. The IO just joked "come on man you can't get that wrong with her sitting next to you" and he felt more relaxed after this. He then directed the same questions to me. Then he asked both of us to describe how we met. When we would finish he would say "and then what?". We ended up describing maybe 2 or 3 of our visits from before I moved. Then he wanted to know how we decided to get married, when we got engaged, when we got married, whether we had a ceremony and who had attended.
He went through the checklist "have you prostituted" "are you a terrorist" etc. etc. Then asked if there was any evidence we wanted to give him. I gave him the following:
letter from our bank showing we had a joint account
car registration with both our names
car purchase order with both our names
first and last page of our lease
health insurance cards
car insurance cards
life insurance from my work showing my husband as beneficiary
4 pictures from our wedding and ~10 since our wedding
He did not ask for any other information even though I had brought with me updated i-864 forms and a giant file folder with pretty much all my immigration paperwork. Then he told me he would approve my case and I would be getting my greencard in the mail in about 2 weeks. We were out of his office in about 20 minutes. We were back in our car at 8:10. Very painless experience |

Timeline Comments: 1Congratulations on your booked interview date! Exciting!
*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the
USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
