Consulate Review: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : September 25, 2016
Embassy Review : Overall a very good experience. I checked my mobile phone with the kiosk behind the consulate, then we joined the line outside the secure entrance. Within a matter of minutes, we were guided to the secure entrance and to the second floor. The staff there was professional and polite, even calming (for my benefit so that I could calm my fiance). While our documentation was being reviewed prior to the official interview, it was discovered that we had submitted an incorrect document as a State Police Certificate. Although my fiance was beside himself, we were assured that this happens and that we could follow-up with the correct document. And that's precisely how it turned out.

I accompanied my fiance for the interview conducted through a window by a very professional, calm, courteous gentleman. I was asked who I was, I responded that I was the petitioner. I was asked if I spoke Portuguese, I replied "no". My fiance was asked if he spoke English, he replied "yes", and the CO replied that we would conduct the interview in English.

The interview itself was very brief.

Questions asked of my fiance:
1. Have you ever been to the US? "No"
2. How did you meet? "Online"
3. Then what happened? "We became friends, decided to meet in person..." (etc.)

Questions asked of both of us:
1. Have either of you been married? "No"
2. Do either of you have children? "No"

Questions asked of me (Petitioner):
1. Where are you from? "Minneapolis, Minnesota"
2. Is that where [the petitioner] will live in the US? "Yes" (Maybe I read too much into it at that point, but "...will live" settled my nerves about the outcome!)
3. How many times have you been to Brazil? "This is my third trip this year"

And that was it. We never formally heard the word "Approved", but at the conclusion, the CO held my fiance's visa, provided a green 221g document that instructed him to obtain the correct State Police Certificate and forward a scanned copy via email, after which the passport with visa will be returned "according to the delivery instructions you provided online". We had chosen to pick up at the ASC in Rio but, thankfully, after the interview we were able to edit our delivery choice online to courier delivery to my fiance's home in RN. Neither of us was able to remain in Rio beyond the 5 days we stayed after the interview.

Although we left feeling a little down (entirely our fault but ultimately the issue was easily resolved and the passport is on the way back to my fiance), we were treated very respectfully, professionally, and with compassion and the interview process itself was painless.
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
