Me and my fiancé arrived pretty early to the embassy, around 7:50 I believe. My interview was at 8:30 but we saw so many people walking up to stand in line that we decided to do the same. I ended up being first in line though, as all the people we saw were there for non-immigrant purposes. While the K-1 visa says it's a non-immigrant visa you're not supposed to stand in that line. You need to stand in the line for immigrants and us citizens.
Eventually I was called up to the guard station where I had to show my passport through the window. The guard checked to see that I was on the list and then I had to take off my cardigan, spin around and show the bottoms of my shoes and wait for a little bit before I was let in. I had left my electronics with my fiancé who was waiting in the car, so I didn't have to leave anything with the guards. Everything else that I had brought with me (all my documents, my cardigan and my shoes) had to be put on a tray and go through an X-ray machine, and I had to walk through one as well, just like at an airport.
I was then told to follow the yellow line up to the embassy and go to window G. When I got to the building the guard asked me why I was there, just tell him that you're there for a K-1 visa interview and that they told you to go to window G. He pointed me in the right direction and I walked up to the window. Shortly after two nice women appeared and started asking for my documents one at a time. When asked for the extract of the population register (personbevis) they wanted the longer version that included both my parents, this is important. If you have everything they ask for in the email this should go super smoothly. We didn't have his tax returns but we had other documentation instead (letter from sponsor explaining why, bank statements, emails from his new employer). That was completely okay.
While they went through everything I had brought with me I was just told to sit down and wait for my name to be called. This was most nervous waiting I've ever had to do, but I didn't have to wait too long before I was called up to window D. There I was met with a very friendly man, around 30 years old, who told me he'd be conducting my interview. I had to read an oath that was taped to the window and then the interview started. There was just the normal questions about how we met, what I though of him when we met in real for the first time (we met on Facebook), what he does for a living, our wedding plans (courthouse wedding, and then a more informal ceremony with friends and family in a few months since you can't really plan much when you're waiting for a visa - he completely understood), what I like about him, how he proposed, what I was gonna do in the US. Just the normal stuff. He then told me I was approved and gave me back the evidence I had brought with me. I told him I had saved all of these little tickets and stuff because I wanted to make a scrapbook. He smiled and said "Well, now you can! Your visa should arrive within 10 business days.".
So I had a very smooth and pleasant experience, and my visa arrived just 5 days after my interview, and that includes a weekend as well.  |
