Just had my interview yesterday and it was pretty much a breeze!
My appointment was scheduled for 10am, and I headed over just around 9:30am. I know people are saying that appointment time doesn't matter, it's first come first served, but I didn't want to wait outside at the crack of dawn while it was snowing heavily. In any case, I think I was past the initial rush of early morning interviews because everything went pretty quickly for me, I was in and out in about 45 minutes.
There was a nice guy at the door who scanned my appointment letter, gave me my number for the day, and directed me to the very short security line. I only had my coat, wallet, and my file of documents with me, so I had no problem. They were checking cell phones, but they were sending people with backpacks away, telling them they had to be back without it by 11am latest.
I went up to the 19th floor and sat in the middle section of seats like I was instructed. There are bathrooms and vending machines in the waiting area. I waited about 20 minutes to be called to a booth. At the booth, the lady asked for my passport, original documents, and medical exam, checked through my paperwork, and then took my fingerprints. She did ask if my husband filed his 2015 taxes yet, but it wasn't a problem when I said no.
After that was done, she sent me back to sit and wait. This wait was not more than 5 minutes before I was called up to another booth for that actual interview. I had to swear an oath that I was telling the truth, he took my fingerprints again. He asked when my husband moved to the States (he was living in Canada up until last December when his job transferred him to California), asked if I had lived anywhere else besides Canada, and that was it, I was approved! He said it would take about 2 weeks for me to get my passport back. (Rather hope it's sooner than that so I can be around for my husband's 30th birthday...!)
Accommodation wise, I stayed at an AirBnB which was LITERALLY across the street from the consulate, and I would recommend going this route.
