Consulate Review: Vancouver, Canada
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : December 16, 2015
Embassy Review : My Vancouver interview was today, Tuesday December 15th at 8am! I'll start with the medical interview first:

I live in the lower mainland, so my appointment with Dr Cheema was over two weeks before my interview and I drove. I was scheduled for 8am and showed up at 7:45-- I was the only person there so no waiting at all. The ladies helping me were very pleasant and knowledgeable. She took all my information, the four passport photos and my payment (debit or cash only!) and I sat down for barely 2 minutes before I was called in.

I was very worried because I have Ulcerative Colitis, and some of the medication I take is quite serious. I know they are looking for things that are communicable or degenerative, but I couldn't help being anxious! It was not a problem. If you're like me and you've been in a thousand Drs appointments before, this is exactly like that. Dr Cheema was brisk and pleasant, rattled off a long list of questions (History of heart problems, drinking problems, drug problems? no no no etc.). I didn't have a note from my family doctor about my prescriptions/prognosis, but I knew exactly what they were and could talk about them and Dr Cheema was not concerned. Took my height, weight, and a quick vision test. The appointment took maybe 10 minutes at best before he pronounced "There is nothing wrong with you!" and I was directed back out to the ladies at the desk. She gave me two sheets for the lab/xray down the street and off I went.

Others have mentioned in their reviews that the lab building is not really nearby and I concur- bus or drive unless you really like to walk. The Xray lab is on the ground floor and I went there first. Took maybe 15 minutes, nothing exciting to report. The blood lab on the second floor took a long time, perhaps half an hour, as it was quite busy. When you walk in the door the numbered ticket dispenser is immediately at your right elbow, so don't forget to get a number! The draw was quick and painless and my nurse very friendly. I was totally done by 9:30.

Now the Visa Interview:

Since I live in the area, I had initially thought I was just going to bus to my interview. As my workday Monday passed though I realized that I was VERY anxious. I am the sort of person to worry a LOT about this kind of thing and I kept flipping very nervously through my paperwork. I was feeling really out of sorts, so my mother suggested I book a hotel room, which I did and it turned out awesome. My sister had the day off, so she came with me and we stayed at the Days Inn for $111.90. The hotel is 4 buildings down from the Consulate; small but clean and served my purpose nicely. (I was too worried to eat, so my sister reports that the hotel breakfast provided is not very good)

I didn't sleep well and was feeling super stressed when I left the hotel at 7:40! It was raining a little but the lineup outside the consulate was covered and there were heating lamps so it was pleasantly warm too. A woman in a red vest checked for my DS-160, my passport and sealed medical records. She directed me to the middle line, where a gentleman printed a sticker for the back of my passport stating my appointment time and the kind of visa I had. He also gave me a laminated card with 'Window B' on it and instructed me to flip the light switch at the window on the 20th floor. I was then directed to the back of the second lineup, which was for initial security. I didn't bring anything with me but my paperwork, driver's license, credit card and my hotel key. (And a paperback book, which I would recommend). After the initial check I was directed inside and up the stairs, where I went through a miniature version of airport security. Didn't have to take my shoes off, but belts and watches and anything in your pockets need to come off if you're wearing them.

I was very worried about the fact that there is not a washroom on the 20th floor. Before we went up the guard asked each person if we needed to use the washroom (it's right by the elevator). I inquired if it was okay to come back down if we needed to use it and the guard said yes, to just let one of the upstairs guards know and they'll take you down.

Upstairs the other visa appointments were instructed to sit down, but I was reminded to do a quick left u-turn and go to window B to flip the switch. A wonderful lady came up to help me! She was SUPER lovely and asked for my:
-DS-160
-Two passport photos
-LONG FORM Birth Certificate (you absolutely need the polymer one, the wallet one is not acceptable)
-Police Certificate
-Letter of Intent to Marry
-I-134 affidavit of support
-Supporting Documents (I gave: Letter from his employer, Bank Summary Statement, 2014 Tax return)

She gave me a number and told me that if my number comes up as counter 1 it's not for me, it's for the downstairs people so wait for an audible voice calling my number. I sat down to wait and read my book. It was probably 20 minutes before I was called to counter 2.

The officer conducting my interview was very somber- I was not lucky enough to get one of those chatty officers other people seem to get! He took my fingerprints and had me swear an oath that everything I said was true to the best of my knowledge and that I was willing and able to marry my fiance within 90 days. He did a LOT of flipping through my paperwork and typing, so I found that most of the interview was me standing quietly at the window in silence.
He asked:
-Tell me about the start of your relationship and how you came to be here today
-What does you fiance do for work?
-Why such a long time before getting engaged?
He then took out the 5 photographs I had submitted in my original packet and asked me to "explain these", so I explained the circumstances of each photograph in chronological order. He seemed very surprised when I told him that my fiance and I started dating when I was still in highschool (17) and he was 24. He then asked if that was legal!!! (!!!??? uh YES???). I was then asked to sit back down and wait to be called.

Very quickly though I was called back up to window B with the nice lady from before who told me I was approved!!!! She gave me instructions that Canada Post will call/email when my visa is ready to be picked up, asked if I had any questions. She did mention I could travel to the states not using the visa, I just can't stay until I use it. She reminded me that I should NOT leave the country until I have applied for advanced parole and adjusted my status. Yes!!! What a huge relief. I followed the arrows on out and back down a different elevator, dumping me into the lobby of the office building right by the Starbucks. It was 9:05 when I checked the clock-- just over an hour!

Overall it was very pleasant and I think I worried a lot for nothing. If you are super prepared and you bring all the documentation like VisaJourney says, you will have no problems! Everyone I dealt with was very friendly and willing to help. Good luck!
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
