Consulate Review: Dominican Republic
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : December 6, 2015
Embassy Review : We left Santiago around 4 am for our 8am appointment. When we arrived we went to the designated line for our appointment time. We then went through security (no cellphones allowed) and in to a courtyard where personnel directed us based on our type of petition. We went into the consulate and obtained a ticket with a number. After that it was back to courtyard to wait for our number to be called. There is a lot of waiting around so please pack some patience. If you get hungry there is a woman who sells snacks. They call the numbers in groups so you have to listen carefully so you won't miss your number. After your number is called you go back into the consulate and find a seat and wait some more until they call you. There are more than 30 windows so when they call your number it will tell you which window to go to. There are monitors throughout the waiting area that will also display the numbers called. After our number was called we went up to the window and the consulate officer verified our names, address and phone numbers. She then asked for our appointment letter with our ticket number. She also asked for our DS-160 confirmation, the letter of good behavior from the police and his medical results in its sealed envelope. Once she had all the required documents she gave us a pamphlet about domestic violence and told us that we needed to read it while we waited to have our number called again. After what felt like forever our number was finally called again and this time it was our interview portion. We walked up to the window (different window & consulate officer) and were greeted by a very pleasant officer. Our interview did not feel like an interrogation but more like a conversation between friends. To start she greeted us with a smile and warm hello. She then had us both raise our right hands and swore us in. Then my fiancé had to place his 4 fingers on a scanner to verify his fingerprints. She then asked us how long we had been dating and whether my fiancé had ever traveled out of the country. She also asked whether he had ever been petitioned before. Make sure to answer every question truthfully. To this question we said yes. My fiance's father was petitioned by his sister over ten years ago and my fiancé was included in this petition as he was still a minor. Unfortunately his aunt passed away and that petition is at a stand still. The consulate officer seemed surprised at first when we answered yes but was very nice and understanding. She then went through the pictures that I sent in with our original I-129F packet. She said I had a ton of pictures (I think I sent in about 20 or so) and then she stopped at the picture with my fiancé being hugged by my daughter. She mentioned how much my daughter looked like me, she even called her my mini-me javascript:emoticon('') and asked if she was my only child and I said yes. She then asked my fiancé if he had children and was previously married to which he answered no. She smiled at us and said "congratulations your visa has been approved. Welcome to the United States"javascript:emoticon('') I can't describe how relieved I was to hear those magical words. My fiancé and I looked at each other with huge grins on our faces and hugged. She gave us a sheet with instructions on where to pick up his passport once the visa is processed. I had a very pleasant experience at the consulate. The staff was pleasant and polite, everything was well organized and the facility was very clean.
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
