My K1 interview was at 7:40am on July 31. We arrived around 7 and were close to the front of the line. By 7:30, the line was quite long. At that time a staff member came out & set up a little rope to line up behind, a bit to the right of the original line. They asked for ONLY people who had 7:40 interviews to line up there, but I didn't quite catch what was happening and a bunch of people who were behind us in line ended up running over to the front, ahead of us.
A second staff member checked everyone's ID against a list. For a second she didn't find my name and I stressed out a bit, but she had two lists - one for immigrant visas and one for other appointments. I was the very last name on that last list. She checked my DS-160 & my loomis paperwork. My fiance was with me & he was allowed to come in with me after showing his US passport. They gave everyone who was there for K1 a number - we were #4.
We went inside & through a metal detector & checked in our phones. This was pretty quick. Then we walked downstairs and sat and waited for the elevator. There is a photobooth here that did passport sized photos for $10. That machine was really annoying. Around 8am, someone came downstairs and let us in the elevator. People absolutely were trying to stand closest to the far door of the elevator so they could get into the room first, but since we already had our number we didn't worry about it.
The room was set up so that people doing other kinds of visas lined up for windows 1-6, and the K1 people sat in a group of chairs in the middle of the room waiting to be called. There was a really hilarious promotional video about the USA playing very quietly with English subtitles. We pretty much just watched that. The first part of the K1 process took about 15mins each and I think there was only one or two windows handling those. I think we were called up at about 9am.
My fiance and I were both able to go up to the first window together. The woman there kept telling me to not be nervous! She asked for my current address and phone number & my planned US address and phone number. I realized I had no clue what my fiance's number is and that was fine - the woman at the desk told us this was the norm these days! She took my medical info and handed me back a disc to hold on to with my chest x-ray photos, to be used later on in the process. She also asked for: my passport & a copy of the photo page, my passport photos, my long form birth certificate and a copy, my police check, the affadavit of support and all financial paperwork, and a new signed intent to marry (just my fiance's though, not one from me.) She took my fingerprints, which she said is the hardest part (!) and then gave me a pamphlet about domestic violence and we sat back down.
I think we waited another half hour after this for the actual interview. I told my fiance that I didn't think he would be able to stand with me for this part but to try it anyway and sure enough, he was asked to sit down in the waiting area for it.
I had to read a very long oath that was taped to the window, and the officer basically didn't make eye contact with me until I was done. It just said I promise not to lie about anything. He then pulled the stack of photos we had sent with our initial application and basically shoved them back through the window at me. I was happy to have them, haha.
He did not ask for any more relationship evidence. We had brought a couple of new things with us that were more "proof of relationship" focussed rather than just focussed on proving that we had met in person, but did not need any of them. Most of what I had read about Montreal said that they don't usually ask for more evidence, so we didn't spend a lot of time on this. I felt ok about having brought some new things though just for my own peace of mind.
I was asked -
If I got the dv pamphlet
What city my fiance lived in
What he did for work
What I do for work
How we met
If I had ever entered the US illegally
If I have ever been arrested
If I had kids
If either of us had been married before
My fiance had a bank account at an RBC branch in the US & I was briefly asked why he uses a "Canadian bank" - but the statements have the US branch address info on it so that was fine.
At one point the officer asked how I thought it was going, I think to put me at ease, but I felt like it was a bad idea to make jokes in return so I just said "fine." He also said "just another hour to go" as a joke. But actually he was done & wrote a bunch of stuff on the folder that all my info was in, gave me back my original birth certificate, gave me the "Welcome to the US" letter, and that was that.
I had read recently that people have been seeing delays of having their visas issued after the 10 day mark, so I did ask what to do if the process takes longer. He said "you will have your visa in 10 days for sure" and I said "okay but just in case" and he said I could email if that happened.
All in all, things went pretty much as expected (thanks to all the info on VJ!).
Also, we stayed at Hotel Zero-1 and it was very nice - more boutiquey than other nearby options, but about the same price, considering this was a long weekend with a bunch of festivals going on. We walked to the embassy from there in about 10mins. |

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the
USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
