Embassy Review : |
I got to the consulate at around 12:30pm on 15 September 2015. There were approximately 8 people in front of me. We all waited in line until 13:05pm. You then proceed in one by one and are requested to leave all electronics with security and proceed through a scanner. Go through the door and follow the yellow footprints.
Once inside I waited about 20 minutes to go up to the first counter. The South African lady behind the counter asked me for my documents one by one.
Unabridged Birth Certificate
Police Clearance
Passport
2 USA Visa Photos
Evidence of Financial Support (Tax returns and Letter of Current Employment)
Divorce Decree(if applicable- for either you or your fiance or both)
Relationship Evidence (Photos, Skype Conversations, Emails, FB posts, travel documentation for both of you)
I got asked a few questions, they were very general. What is you final address in America going to be? Have you traveled to America before? What other countries have you been to? When did you meet your fiance?
The lady then said that all of my documentation was in order and that I should go around the corner to pay the cashier $265. I used an American credit card and there was no hassle at all. You also get given a document on domestic abuse once all your documents are in order. You can read through this while you sit and wait for your interview.
I then went to sit down and waited about 10 minutes before I was called up to a window for my interview. I was greeted by a friendly American lady. She asked me the following questions.
What is you fiance's full name?
Tell me the whole story about how you met?
Have you lived/worked in any other country besides South Africa?
When do you intend on getting married?
The interviewer also looked at photos and asked me a question pertaining to them."I see you two have a dog together- what is his name?"
The interview was very quick and easy. The interviewer then said- "Congratulations your Visa is approved." She handed me a pink slip and told me that I could pick my visa up in 3 days. They keep you birth certificate and passport. Both are returned to you when you collect your passport with your visa in it. The entire process was approximately 2 hours.
You may then leave and pick up all your electronics at security.
I received an email the very next day stating that my passport was ready for collection. All you need to take to collect your passport is the pink slip and ID. The consulate then give you your passport, brown envelope (do not open), your birth certificate (as well as your fiances that was sent in with the petition) and all of your relationship evidence.
Our entire experience was awesome and so efficient. The Johannesburg Consulate was amazing- I couldn't have wished for a better experience. I hope that you find this as useful as I found the reviews before my interview=) Best of Luck=)

Timeline Comments: None yet, be the first!
*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the
USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
