Overall, it was pretty easy. I had a female officer, and she asked the purpose of my visit, so I told her that I was going to marry my fiance and that I had a visa. She then asked for my sealed package. As she looked through the documents, she took a picture of me and my finger prints (only the right hand). The only question I got from her after that was when we would get married.
She then explained that I would have until January 20 to marry my fiance.
That was it. Very easy. |

We attended the interview together. The female officer asked each of us some basic questions to verify that we were married. Being nervous, my husband gave her the incorrect date of my birthday and I had to correct him jokingly, to which the officer laughed. Overall, the entire interview only lasted for 10-15 minutes and it was pretty easy going. We were told that the review/approval should be completed within 2-6 weeks. We did not hear from them within that time period. After 9 weeks, we scheduled an InfoPass at our local USCIS field office to ask for an update. We were told that I-485 applications were delayed (due to an emphasis on processing naturalization applications at the time...). We assumed that it was because of the upcoming presidential election and decided to wait until November. While checking the processing time for I-485 on USCIS's website on 10/13/2016, we noticed that our I-485 NOA date was past their processing time. We made another InfoPass for 10/17 and requested an update on our case. The officer at the counter looked up our case in the computer and said that they would call us the next day to figure out what was going on. While we were writing down our telephone number, the officer made an internal call to someone (probably the case adjudicating officer) and after he got off the phone, he told us that our case was just approved and an email was sent to us to confirm it. Based on this interaction, we assume that our case file was forgotten or misplaced somewhere after the interview until that day without any action taken. |

RFE for more evidence, especially financial. We resubmitted all bank account statements with a longer and more detailed letter of explanation on how we shared and managed our finances, complete postings of our facebook accounts, journeys and pictures, and fitness records. |

My appointment time was 9:15am and the confirmation letter said that I should arrive at the entrance gate 15 minutes prior to my interview time. I got there around 8:45am, and the guards let me in as soon as I got there. I got through the security and was given a slip with a number when I entered the waiting/interview room. I was No.44. They also gave me a small slip that I should write my name, address, and phone number in and told me to submit it with other documents. I knew from other people’s posts that it would be a 3-step process. First you submit your paperwork and they will check to see if you have everything required. Secondly, they will take your fingerprints, and finally you have the actual interview with a Consular officer. For some reason I only had two steps. I waited for more than 2 hours before my number was called for the first step. I got very sleepy and tired just sitting and waiting in the room :-P I should have brought something to read or kill time with.
For the 1st step you need to put the following in a clear plastic folder they give you:
1. 1 color photo (2 inch x 2 inch, put it in a small plastic bag they give you)
2. Current passport (must be valid for six months beyond the intended date of entry into the US)
3. DS-160 confirmation page
4. Family Register with its English translation, any other civil documents if applicable
5. I-134 Affidavit of Support and/or evidence of other financial support
6. Police certificates (Each country in which you have resided for more than six months or longer after the age of 16)
7. Court and prison records, military record, if applicable
8. Medical examination report
When I handed my documents to the staff, he quickly looked through them and returned those they didn’t need. I got some tax documents of my fiancé back as well as the CD that contains my X-ray information. The VJ guide recommends that you bring an updated letter of intent, but they didn’t ask for it. The staff seemed satisfied by what I submitted, and I was quickly told to wait for the next step. It took some people a very long time at the 1st step. I assume that they kind of hurried and made an interview appointment before they were ready with their documents.
I was called back for the second and last step about 15 minutes later. The Consular officer was nice and friendly. I was first asked to raise my right hand and pledge that I would basically tell the truth, and he took my fingerprints. He then asked to confirm that I was engaged with my fiancé. Here are the questions I got.
-Has he (my fiancé and petitioner) been engaged before?
-Are you aware that he has filed a petition before?
-How did you two meet?
-What’s the name of the website? (because I answered that we met online)
-When was the first time you met him?
-How many times have you met him so far?
-Did you meet his family?
-Did he meet your family?
-How did he propose?
-What was the most recent gift that he gave you? (The officer asked this question in response to my answer to the prior question)
-Did you give him a gift as well? What is it? Why did you choose that gift?
That was it. He said that "everything seems to be in order” twice at the end and told me that my visa would arrive in the mail in a week.
It was pretty easy. I thought they would ask more about my fiancé’s job or what I do here, or ask for more proof of our relationship. I guess they are satisfied with what we already had submitted :-)
The overall interview time was probably around 5 minutes. It took 3 hours for a 5-minute interview. |

Timeline Comments: None yet, be the first!
*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the
USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
