Embassy Review : I wanted to give a review of my interview at the Vancouver Consulate. I arrived a few minutes before my appointment time of 9am. I had to show my passport, my DS-160 confirmation page right away, and my medical package envelope. Then I went through the initial security of a guard flipping through my folder of various papers and photos and wallet and passport I had brought with me. I decided against bringing a purse as I didn't have a small enough one. I was surprised to see that they had small little locked boxes with keys where you could store your cell phone if you brought it. I wish I would have known this! I think the first thing you want to do after your interview is call your fiancé, but I had to wait till I got home to call him as I left my cell phone at home. I was then allowed in the building, and had to go through another security check. It is very similar to going through security at the airport. I had to take off my boots too. After I went through security I asked to use the washroom. This is the ONLY TIME TO USE THE BATHROOM! After that I was escorted up the elevator to the 20th floor. I was told to go to window "B" and flip the light switch. Make sure you turn it on, then off....then someone will come to that window. The lady took my passport, and a few other items and asked me to sit down and she would call me back up to collect more items from me. About 15 minutes later she called me back up, and collected all the required forms and papers from me. Make sure you have your fiancé sign and date an "intent to marry" letter within 30 days of your interview date! I overheard 2 other k1 visa applicants not getting their visa's approved that day because their letters were dated for more than 30 days! To be on the safe side I also brought another certified copy of my fiancé's divorce decree, although it had previously been submitted. I am glad I did, as they asked for it again. Another tip I have is to make sure you make copies of your long form birth certificate and your police check. You need to bring in both the copies and originals, but this way they will give you back your original copies if you need to use them again down the road. I was then given a number and was told to sit down till it was called/came up on the screen. I think not having any clocks to look at and not wearing a watch helped the time go by quicker. Here is another tip....there is no window 1....so when you see your number on the screen and it says to go to window number 1, it does not exist. Super confusing!! Your number should be called soon after this though. One thing that really surprised me was how small the waiting area was, and just how close the interview windows were to some of the seating in the waiting area. I could hear most of people's interviews that were close to the chair I was sitting in. When I was finally called up, the officer said he needed a few minutes to review my case and he would call me back up. He took about 4-5 minutes. The interview officer was very friendly, and cheerful. He asked me these questions: how and when did we meet, has he been married before, have we met each others families, how often do we see each other, how did my fiancé propose. The interview was less than 5 mins, and it ended with him saying " I am approving this visa!" I was so excited and it really showed, and it made the officer giggle at me I was told to sit down once again, and I would be called back to window "B". When I was called up, I was just given the rules of the k1 visa, that I must get married within 90 days of entering, and just info about picking up my visa/passport. When I left I asked the guards outside what time it was. In total I was at the consulate for 2 hours 25 minutes. I would say that the medical and the actual interview were the best parts of this whole k1 visa process. I found the paper work, and wait times to be the most stressful.
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
