Easy entry with few questions - just the standard how did you meet/ what is his name/ where does he live/ where do you work (I don't) kind of questions. Wait time was minimal, they reorganized the entry into different sections. |

So my interview at the Vienna embassy was pretty much like everybody else´s :-)
Once the embassy had the documents sent to them from NVC everything moved really fast.
The sent me packet 3 and it took almost no time to gather all the docs - the thing that set us back a week (not bad in the grand scheme, especially since I am still working anyways), was that when reading packet 3 the first section says "fill out DS-160 and DS-230 Part one and send the confirmation page for the DS-160 and the whole completed DS-230 back right away"
The second section lists all the supporting docs that are applicable to me (Affidavit of Support, Police Certificate, 2 photos, birth certificate, relatoinship evidence) and then it says "do not sent any of these documents"
Well, I concentrated so hard on not sending any documents, that I didnt include the DS-160 and DS-230 with the readiness letter either lol
So beware of that! They were really nice and sent me back my readiness letter right away (had it back 4 days after having sent it) and wrote a note on the letter to please follow step one :-)
So I did and a few days later I had my packet 4 with interview date, appointment letter and DS-156K (NO NOT SIGN this one, only fill it out).
For the medical they sent me the appointment letter, and said I should make an appointment with the office on or before Oct 7 (the day before my interview). Because of work I chose to go to the medical on Monday (medical history, blood drawn, chest x-ray), then go back to finish the Medical Thursday before the interview (flue shot, talk to doctor and do "general check up" with him, be handed the entire packet and pay).
After the medical I got one sealed envelope for the embassy plus one copy of the whole thing for myself to bring to the US.
The interview was easy, just as described here before (also I had had three J-1 interviews before, so it wasnt my first time!). It always pays off to show up a bit early - too early you get sent away again, but just come back 10 mins later...
Only one guy was in front of my, but just as they called us in a guy came from the elevators and totally jumped the line. I was mad first, but the embassy staff actually sorted this out quickly - the guy in front of me was done first, I was done second and the line jumping guy was still waiting to be interviewed when I already left. Plus he had brought the wrong docs...
Anways, like others said:
Window 5 - talk to the lady there and give her all the docs she wants (DS-156k, Affidavit of support, Birth Certificate - they didnt care whether it was the German or international one by the way - police certificate, passport, 2 pictures)
Window 3 - go pay. I brought the exact amount in Euro as cash, but that wasnt required I gather.
Window 6 - talk to the consular officer. That only took a few mins while she took my finger prints. she wanted to know how and where we had met, if I had met his parents and if he had been to AUT for a visit. All easy questions.
Window 5 again - where the lady told me I was all done and she gave back my birth certificate. And took my phone number and email address (we have a strict no-phone-at-work policy in our school, so I asked for alternatives to being called).
That was it! I was in and out in about 45 mins total. This makes it one of my fastest experiences at the embassy.
Oh, you can only bring phones, no other electronic devices or anything (laptop, kindle etc). |
