Consulate Review: Sydney, Australia
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : May 5, 2015
Embassy Review : Just like everyone states, you head to level 10 and go through security. They're lovely and sincerely thank you if you don't bring any bags or phone etc. Then you head over to a desk with two girls who sort through your documents, put them in order and shove it in a clear folder.

They told me that I didn't need the printed receipt that the post office gave me, so I put it into my "spare" envelope that I brought with me in case anything wasn't needed. Lucky, because upstairs they asked for the printed receipt. Note: hold onto everything regardless if the girls downstairs tell you it's unnecessary.

Next you go up into an elevator to the 59th floor and speak to a person who asks you again if you have a mobile or Fitbit. I left both in my hotel so all good to keep going through the heavy door into the waiting/interview room. Make sure the person buzzes the door open before you start pulling though or you'll look silly trying to heave a door open... like me. I swear she did it for sh!ts and giggles.

Take a "visa" ticket and wait. I waited around 15 minutes before going to counter 5 where they take your clear folder, arrange a few things, staple this, sticky tape that, ask you for your finances home phone or mobile number and where you'd like your adjustment of status to be mailed in the future. Then back to waiting.

1.5 hours later, I got called up to teller 2 which was a man in his 30s and what looked like a woman trainee. He lead the interview.

I swore to tell the truth then answered the following questions:
How did you meet your fiance?
Where have you lived in the past?
How did he propose?
When was your divorce finalized?
Port of entry to USA on previous trips question (I withdrew my application to enter USA over a year ago)
How did you start up dating?
What does your fiance do for work?

After the conversation (because despite there being questions, it did feel like just a chat) he said that I was approved and will get the visa in the next week.

I said thank you, walked out the big doors and started happy crying. WOOOOO IM GETTING MARRIED!! And all the security people were excited for me and with me and I ran back to the hotel to call Patrick and tell him the amazing news.

To note: You're interviewed in front of everyone. Everyone can hear the questions, the answers and watch you when you turn around to walk out. While there, I overheard 3 outcomes. 1. Your visa has been approved and will arrive within a week. 2. Everything looks great, we just need to get your medical. The doctor will send that straight to us so you don't need to do anything. And 3. We are unable to approve the visa until you supply us with XYZ documents. We will keep the case open and you can either take your passport with you today or leave it with us.

Please remember to bring income proof from your American fiance. W2s for the last 2 years and pay slips. That's what gave one person outcome 3 today.

As a whole, it was a pleasant experience. I was nervous at first but after waiting for 90 minutes, was just bored. So bring a magazine to pass the time. And relax. As hard as that sounds to do, I know it feels like your future with the person of your dreams rests in the hands of this individual, but they aren't asking any questions that you won't know the answer to. So pretend you're talking with a friend and gush your heart out. And enjoy it! They want to hear about the love of your life!! How cool is that!!

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
