Consulate Review: Dominican Republic
Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : June 20, 2015
Embassy Review : Our interview was on 6/18/15 at 10am. After reading previous reviews we decided to get there by 9:15 since they do not allow people in if they arrive too early. We parked a block away where they charged us $250 pesos as we walked the block up there were plenty of buscones trying to tell us that we needed several things. We ignored them and continued walking.

We got there at 9:15am and waited on line for about 5 mins, they checked our appt paper and let us in to security. Once we passed security (people please read what you are not allowed to bring into the building). A lady in front of us had her cell phone and delayed everyone else. We exited and proceeded to the building to the left. There we were given our lucky #357. We also met with our friends who also had their cita. We chatted while our number was called.

At approximately 10:45 we were called to window #5. There was an older Dominican lady who asked my husband his name. She asked for the birth certificate, marriage certificate, my divorce certificate, medical, certificado de la policia and passport. She noticed that my hubbys picture was on her computer screen and then said that she will not need the pictures because VAC loaded it. I noticed that she was about to tell us to go have a seat when I told her that we were expedited and needed to submit the aos. She looked back at her pc and took the aos. The then handed us a paper and told us to go pay at window #41. There we paid the $325 and took the receipts to the lady at window #5 as she requested. After we were done with that she told us to take a seat that we would be called for the interview.

We sat down for about 15 minutes when my husband noticed that our number was on the screen. People you have to pay attention to the screens as it is very difficult to hear the CO’s calling out the numbers via the PA system. There are even staff with loud speakers repeating the numbers. We were amazed that we were called so fast but were prepared to wait about 2 hours. We were called to window number 12 where a pretty Indian looking young lady (maybe late 20’s) greeted us. She did not show any type of emotion. She asked us to swear and we began. She asked my husband to press his fingers on the pad as they take fingerprints again there. I quickly noticed that she was not going to show any affect (emotion), luckily I’m a Social Worker and understood why. She began with the questions. These are not in any particular order:

To my husband:
When did you meet?
Where did you meet?

To us:
Do you have children together?
Do you have children separately?

To me:
What’s his daughter’s name?

To hubby:
Who does your daughter live with?
What is your wifes daughters name and how old is she?
How old is your daughter?

To us:
Have we been married before?
When did I get divorced?
Where did we get married?
How do we communicate?

To hubby:
Has someone petitioned you before? Yes, my wife when we were engaged.

To me:
What happened during the interview at that time?
Me: The CO informed us that she was placing us under AP and that it could take 60 days for them to contact us. When 6 months passed and we decided to get married cause that’s what we have wanted to do all along because we love each other. (we got married 10 months after being placed on AP)

To hubby:
What time of work do I do?
Where do I work? (hubby doesn’t know how to say it in English, but said it in Spanish)
Have you travelled out of the country?
Where do we stay when I visit?
Have you had problems with the police?
How long have we been together? (at that point I think she was trying to trick us cause one of her first questions was when did we meet)

She then spoke to me in English and asked:
What type of work do I do?
What type of work does my husband do?
Who does he live with?
What is the name of the sister he lives with?
Does that sister have children?

To hubby:
How long has she been living in Florida? My hubby said 8 years and she looked down at some papers and kinda nodded (as if she was about to disagree), we maintained our cool and then she said “ahhh yes I see now.

To me:
Do you visit frequently? Yes about every 2 months. Uffff this is my 15th trip.
Could I see your passport? Yes.

I gave her my passport and she carefully flipped through the pages. She then all of a sudden became “warm-blooded” lol (I noticed when she said WOW) and had a smile on her face as she passed me my passport . She then proceeded to type something on the pc. She then arranged some papers and placed them inside my husbands passport (at that point I knew that WE DID IT). She looked at us with a smile and said “SU VISA HA SIDO APROVADA”, she gave us a white paper which indicates how to know when the passport is ready. She also stated that due to some issues the passport will not be ready for about 4 weeks or so. We were soooo happy, we kissed and hugged and went on our way.

I want to thank VJ for the guidance. I do want to add that before you compare your case/petition with others please know that each and every case is unique. People on this website are very helpful but keep in mind that they do not work for immigration, embassies or consulates. They are knowledgeable but not experts. Things change with immigration frequently and we need to stay educated.

With that said, I would like to take the time to thank my friends that I would’ve never met if it weren’t for VJ. Friends who I have built a close relationship with and keep close to my heart. Janill, Denise, Fior, Carmen, Raymeri, Frances and Natalie. I love you girls.
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
