We had a good experience at the visa interview today.
When we arrived we were told my husband needed to fill out a form because their systems were down. It was quite detailed, asking for his past employers, past dates of travel to the US etc. The lady handing out the form was really nice and asked my husband to just fill it out to the best of his ability since the systems were down. Luckily, I had printed out all the forms we've ever submitted throughout this process, so we had the info on hand anyway and didn't have to try to recall it there on the spot.
I think the systems being down may have delayed the process a bit, as we were there for a full 2 hours.
The security people, the person who collected our initial documents and express post envelope, and the guy who did the interview were all very nice. In fact we were probably lucky the guy interviewing us had a good sense of humour. My husband was a bit nervous and made a couple flubs in his answers. (He said the wrong year when asked when we got married, and when we met. Later when the guy asked again he realised and corrected himself). Anyway, like I said, luckily the guy had a good sense of humour and I'm sure he could see we are a genuine married couple!
We had our 16 month old with us, and luckily he behaved really well. Toward the back of the waiting room they had a children's area with a big bead frame and some other toys so that was great! I was so happy to see those toys because I knew it would make the wait that make easier, and it was very helpful with keeping our son busy. He had fun walking around the waiting room. By the way we were allowed to bring a couple of books for our son, and a snack for him (which was helpful). There was another couple there who was allowed to bring their pram in, so I wish we'd brought our pram.
The questions that I can recall my husband being asked:
-When did you meet? Get engaged? Get married?
Where did you get married?
How are you qualifying-assets/etc? How much assets do you have.
My parents were joint sponsors--he asked what their job titles are.
He also asked what I am doing for work at the moment.
I think that was pretty much it. There was one moment where he said my parent's tax return hadn't been included. I had brought another copy with me, and their W2s were included with the original documents which were returned to us when we arrived, so luckily it wasn't a problem.
Overall it was a good experience, and I appreciated how nice the consular staff were. Good luck to all of you reading this! |
