Event Description

Embassy Review : My appointment was for 8:15am 28th of April. I flew in the night before and stayed at the Oaks Hotel on College street (AU$156 for the night, the restaurant downstairs is good and you can take it to you're room if you're stressed), it's only 15 minute walk from the embassy.

I got to the MLC center 30 minutes early and good job I did because it takes that long to get through security because most people around you will not be organised for quick processing.

Tips to make it quick:
- DO have your paperwork in the same order as the DSL-1076 checklist they send you.
- DO print your name on the back of ONE USA passport photo (5cm x 5cm)
- DO NOT take your phone, iPod, iPad, laptop or anything else electric...just don't! They will really appreciate it and tell you they love you if you don't bring anything like that.
- DO NOT wear anything with big metal chunks on it, you are being screened just like at the airport. do them and yourself a favor.
- DO NOT bring a bag. You cant take it in, not even a handbag. put some cash in your pocket for a coffee later.

There is not water available or bathrooms so make sure you take care of that before you get there.

After the security screen you can leave your coat or bag if you really had to bring one with the security guy, it's just like a cloak room. it's quicker if you don't have to though and you can jump ahead of some people.
You are then directed to a queue where two ladies at a desk will tick you off their list and arrange your paperwork in order. If you have already done so its another opportunity to speed things up (tell them if you did it or not, they will tell you they love you if you did). They put the necessary bits in a new folder and direct you to take a seat.

The guy who operates the lift will call a small group of you over and send you tot he 56th floor, your ears will pop. Follow all the american flags on your right (you really cant miss it) to a bank teller looking window where I woman ticks you off her list after looking at the folder you were given and sends you through the big door to where the magic happens.

Don't line up at the windows like I almost did, there's a tiny ticket machine to your right. take a ticket and sit down with all the other nervous looking people. The ticket machine gives you two options as to which visa you are there for.

I managed to work myself up into a complete tizzy so I was shaking by the time I was called to the first window (they call your ticket number just like at the deli)in front of the seating area. At the first window they go through the folder the ladies put in order, he handed back my prepaid self addressed express post envelop saying I didn't need it because the K1 fee covered a courier service (I was annoyed I had wasted the money on it but it wasn't until later that I really started to panic about weather he was right or not).

I'm sent to take a seat again and wait to be called on the same ticket number (DONT lose your ticket) tot he windows to the left of the door.

A very nice lady has a quick chat with me, it's like talking to a bank teller,
She asked me the following:
How did you meet? I gushed out the long version of the story and the lady "awwed" with me.
How did he propose? more gushing more awwing.
Does your fiances family live close by?
What does he do for a living?
What do your friends and family think of you moving to the US?
Have you ever been married before?
Has your fiance ever been married before? She asked me for details on this.
Do you have wedding plans?

She says the affidavit of support is recommended but not necessary if you are capable of working.

Then she says my visa is approved, congratulations, you will receive your passport back in 1 to 2 weeks, have a nice day. I was a little shocked and was expecting a bit more then a 5 minute chat and just confirmed with her that I rally shouldn't book any flights until I have the visa in my hot little hand.

Everyone who works there is very nice and polite. The rudest people I came across were other people going for their interviews, it looked like they were processing different types of visas, not just relationship ones. I got chatting with a couple of already married people and they were very lovely and gave me the thumbs up as I wondered aimlessly out the door.

I was having a coffee in the Lindt cafe by 9:30am.

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
