After all the stressful waiting, running around gathering documents, trying to fit my whole wardrobe in 2 suitcases I can finally breathe in and relax.
I had my interview today June 2nd at 8 am. We took a cab to the consulate because we didn't feel like driving and wasting time looking for parking. We found it crazy that we had to get out of the cab a block away from the consulate only because we didn't have any more cash since the driver took the longest possible way there. Basically we hit the construction area and wasted time on making a detour which made a 2 minute drive seem much longer. Beware of cheap drivers with taxi meters running a lot faster than their cab is moving!
So my fiancé and I got to the consulate at 7:30am and there was a small lineup that was moving well as they were gradually letting people in one by one. As we were called in the security guy at the door asked my fiancé to get rid of his cross body laptop size bag that only had our binder with the documents in it (fail on my part for not realizing that bags are also a no-no at the consulate). The security guy quickly fetched a map that showed locker rooms where we could leave our stuff. They probably have it ready for dummies like us who after reading instructions inside out still manage to have something from the ban list with them. Security check was super quick cuz I had nothing except my document binder and sunglasses in my hands.
Next I was directed to take stairs down where I took a seat and waited. Soon my fiancé joined me and we then waited a little longer before a group of us were ushered in the elevator. We were the first group, so the whole consulate waiting area was empty. As we stepped out from the elevator we all lined up and were instructed by the consulate clerk to have the DS160 and the passport ready. She took the form and the passport and gave us a little tag that said Applicant 2 with the documents we had to have ready listed on it. We took a seat and were soon called "applicant 2 to window 2". The lady at the window took all the documents one by one: passport, page with the proof of MRV fee payment, birth certificate plus copy, police clearance certificates, affidavit of support forms plus accompanying tax return copies and bank statements, and medical records. Then she took my fingerprints. The guy at the window beside us (also a K1 beneficiary) did not have a page with his MRV receipt number printed out from the CSC website, so i overheard the clerk saying something about him having to pay the fee again at the consulate but I think eventually they figured it out.
After we were done with handing in the documents we were again asked to take a seat and wait till we are called. In less than 5 minutes we were called to window 7 where we met an absolutely nice and friendly consular lady that asked me to read the oath and took my fingerprints. She was handling our paperwork while asking questions about how we met and how do we stay in touch, what our plans for the wedding are and what we do for the living. Then she congratulated us and said that she was going to go ahead and issue us the visa. She took a little more time finishing up typing up something in her computer asked me if I ever had a problem with the police or border control and then she finally gave us the welcome letter to take home and told us to expect my passport in a week to a week and half. Since I am enrolled in a certificate program in US that started today I asked if it was possible to get my passport back sooner. After I showed the letter proof of enrolment she was happy to make a note on my file requesting the visa to be printed today ,so I am hoping to get it asap since we are staying here in Montreal waiting for it.
Overall it was a great experience, I feel very satisfied with how Montreal consulate handles things. Now we are off to continue exploring Montreal and celebrating the end of our K1 journey and the beginning of our life as a family. |

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the
USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
