Comments : Note: We petitioned to extend the process by four months; the Consulate wanted to interview and grant the K1 by November. However, holiday travel plans plus a visiting scholar position meant we needed to postpone until January. The Sydney Consulate was very gracious and understanding.

So while our interview date was 278 days from NOA1, it would have actually been closer to 185 days, had we played along with the originally requested interview time.

Consulate Review: Sydney, Australia
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : January 28, 2014
Embassy Review : My review went really well. I showed up *very* early on the day - 8am for a 10:30am interview - and was advised to return at 9:30am. So turning up an hour before your interview seems to be what they expect.

Security was very tight, as it to be expected. I don't recommend taking anything but your interview documentation, as they will confiscate it all. They'll also want shoes and belts taken off at Sydney, so keep that in mind before wearing large boots.

One small fuss occurred because Kelly and I had a CD as part of our interview documentation (it was part of a photo set taken of us at the zoo). They will *not* allow those in, nor USB sticks, etc. So anything like that should be taken out ahead of time. It had completely slipped my mind, and there was a tense 2 minutes while I struggled to remember where in our documentation (which was all scanned as well) I had a CD!

The interview process itself was nice and easy. Take a ticket, just like getting your driver's license, then wait. One stop at a desk to provide confirmation of the documentation you brought. They'll give you back a couple of things at that stage, like birth certificate, then you sit down again and wait for the interview proper.

Interview for me was really easy. I was asked the following questions:

1. Was the difference in age between myself and my fiancee (9.5 years) an issue at all? (The answer is no)
2. Confirmation of answers given in previous petitions and packets: had I ever been married, had she, did either of us have kids, DOB, etc.
3. When did we meet?
4. When did we physically meet? (ours was a match made in Twitter)
5. What did we do the first time we met?
6. Had my fiancee ever been to Australia?
7. What did we do while she was in Australia?
8. When, if I was granted the VISA, would I be travelling to the US?
9. Did we have a wedding date?
10. What were our plans for the ceremony?

Then, I was told that it was clear I was in a relationship. I didn't have my med exam results (the radiographer had been tardy in authorizing the release of my details and doing the confirmation work for the CO), but was told that I was approved pending the receipt of the med exam. I'm on AP now, but the CO has the med exam so now all I have to do is wait :-)
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
