Consulate Review: Madrid, Spain

Embassy Review : I had my interview scheduled at the American Embassy in Madrid at noon on May 28th, 2014. Just before that I picked up my medical exam at Unidad Angloamericana, which is 25 min walking from the Embassy. The medical exam is pretty relaxed and nothing to be worried about as long as you are in a reasonable good health. They send you to other hospital (Nuestra Señora del Rosario) to have a chest X-ray taken. This other hospital is 20 minutes walking from Unidad Angloamericana. It is easy to go walking from one place to other. I do not recommend taken a cab or a bus.

I arrived at the Embassy at 11am and security let me in after checking my name was on the list. They made me turn my cell phone off and kept it until I left the Embassy. I had my folder with documents checked.

Then, I went to the waiting room after I picked up a number. In that room is also where the Embassy employees are in their cubicles. I waited 35 minutes and my number was called. A Spanish employee checked that they had all the necessary documents included in the folder the NVC sent to them, picked up my passport, two passport photos, had my electronic fingerprints taken, returned the original documents to me and picked up the medical exam report. She did not take the X-ray. After no more than 5 minutes, she asked me to go back to my chair and wait for the interview.

Then, after no more than 2 minutes, the American Vice-consul called my number. He asked me a few questions in Spanish: what's my birth date, how I met my American wife, where does she live and what's her job. Then, he wanted to see some photos of us I had taken with me and I had to swear all the information submitted was true. He did not asked for her tax return or any other information. Then, he told me everything was correct and my visa was approved!!!!! After this, he told me I could leave the Embassy. I picked up my cell phone at security and left. In and out in about 45 minutes.

Finally, I received my passport with the visa and the sealed envelope by courier at my home in Madrid in three working days.

In sum, the medical exam and Embassy experience in Madrid is very easy, fast and smooth. I would not be concerned about it if you have all the paperwork in place.
Rating : Very Good
